We have been enjoying New Years Eve dinner at the Mountain Top Inn for the past several years. Unfortunately, this year my husband's steak was extremely fatty to the point of not being enjoyable nor entirely edible. He also had the oysters which were excellent as was my own meal (the brazed short rib). The waitress provided excellent service. This "mis-steak" seems unusual for the Mountain Top Inn so we wanted to share the story of this bad experience especially since the restaurant advertised serving from its "new dinner menu" for this New Years Eve. Since a new menu often reflects a change in management which can cause a once good restaurant to go down hill quickly we wanted to share this experience with others just in case this is the new normal for this once great establishment.

Dear ThemHorses,
Thank you for taking the time to write and post your review, for all of your positive feedback and for being loyal Mountain Top customers.
We wanted to assure you that our resort, restaurant/tavern and kitchen are indeed under the same continued management for the past several years. We are lucky to have found a talented and creative team that are as excited about serving our guests, as we hope our guests are to visit Mountain Top.

We apologize if there was any confusion regarding our menu. We do make seasonal changes to our menu in order to ensure the freshest ingredients & seasonal appropriateness, while keeping the most popular items intact. The menu offered at New Year’s was our current winter seasonal menu accompanied by the specials of the evening. We are definitely curious about your steak, as all of our steaks are hand-cut right here in our kitchen. Were you able to discuss your concerns with your server so that this could be resolved on the spot? One caveat we would offer is that we did have Prime Rib on the menu that evening, and Prime Rib, by nature, can be a fattier steak than other leaner cuts.
We hope that you will come back for dinner in 2020, or to celebrate New Year’s 2021 – or simply for one of our burger and brew Wednesdays - to enjoy another one of those great experiences you have been accustomed to at MTR.
Thank you again for your feedback and for your patronage.

The overall service at the resort was excellent! Friendly staff! The restaurant was excellent in terms of quality & selection! The room had nice lake views. The amenities included some old-fashioned fun (shot guns - clay birds & horseshoes)!
The grounds were well maintained with room to roam. I would highly recommend this location traveling with friends & family. A good value!

Stayed 3 nights as part of a AAA bus trip in December 2019. There is so much to love about this inn. My room was a suite in the main lodge, with living area, kitchenette, large bedroom, and large bathroom with walk-in shower and bathtub. All the primary items you hope for in a hotel room were covered … good water pressure, lots of hot water, ample toiletries – even a towel warmer! Things that elevated my stay were the stunning views and the outstanding staff. The little welcome reception for our tour group was well-done. A real highlight of my stay were the meals. It’s difficult to get meal choices that balanced and tasty when serving buffet style for a group of 40, but somehow Mountain Top managed that for all of our breakfasts and dinners. And I can’t say enough about the kitchen staff and servers. They were all so welcoming and friendly. No one individual stood out, and that’s what’s so amazing. EVERYONE we encountered in the dining area seemed to go out of their way to create a warm atmosphere. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, but with one small caution. Our weeknights were lovely and quiet. But Friday night was disrupted by a loud wedding party at the fire pit till quite late. The fire pit itself was not the problem – it was the drinking, yelling, sledding (!) right outside a row of guest rooms. So I can give a strong recommendation for staying at this inn, but if at all possible, plan your stay around wedding parties.

First, negative reviews sadden us. We wish guests could have experienced Mt Top the way we always have, with warm, friendly staff who address/resolve any issues that arise. We hope you folks have happier travels.
Since 2006, our immediate family of 5, plus 4 Goldens and 1 mini dachshund, has looked forward to every getaway. Several times, other family members have joined us. We have stayed at the retired Horseshoe Ridge across from the barn, the cabins, Campion, Dewberry, Grand Vista, and Trillium because they're all pet-friendly.
So, we can't speak to rooms in the lodge. Maybe one day. But, first, we'll read the reviews ;)
We have stayed during all of the seasons, including mud season, and enjoyed just about all of the seasonal activities, including the discontinued snow tubing and dog sledding. I recall the skeet machine being broken, so we took a pontoon boat ride.
Will follow up on skeet shooting. We have been here during various holidays and weddings. We really can't think of anything that has dampened a stay, not even a wedding party in the tavern restricting access. Notices are posted; we're flexible to have a meal in the house, or go off premises. As a
family including pups, we've also realized these stays are comparable to our other vacations in basic costs. We continue to appreciate everyone we meet: the helpful front desk clerks, housekeeping [I don't have to bring linens/towels- not even for the beach], restaurant servers [bartender/Vermontini], grounds keepers [hot tubs, poop bags, snow shovel], activities coordinators, and masseuses. Next year, 15 relatives [some repeat guests, some new] will join us during 2 getaways. To end, heartfelt thanks to Mike for making the 65th birthday plans to include extended family, a reality.

Room tip: Strongly suggest you read other reviews for this topic. No experience with lodge rooms.

I have never in my life dealt with such wildly incompetent customer service. I was a guest at a wedding, booked a room, and then ended up cancelling in lieu of a different (more expensive) property on the resort. To do this, I had to call multiple times, and have a long email thread confirming this cancellation- which was a huge pain to do in and of itself. The $400 was never refunded. I called multiple times about this issue, only to be told I was wrong- they denied the cancellation ever happened and refused to refund the money- despite the paper trail where it was acknowledged in writing that the room was cancelled. I let a message with the manager, received no response. I then got my bank involved. The bank waived the charge, but now I've learned Mountain Top Inn is fighting the bank to reinstate the charge. What you are doing is criminal. You shouldn't be allowed to operate a business.

Room tip: Any couples looking for a prospective venue, please save your guests the headache. It is so not worth it.

Dear Caroline H,
We are having a difficult time connecting the name on this review with any of our reservations, however, we do believe that the only incident we have on file of a similar nature (for a $350 lodge room cancelation) would indicate that unfortunately your cancelation was within our 30 day policy and therefore non-refundable*. Your correspondence began with us before the 30 day deadline when you were inquiring about adding 2 more guests to your double occupancy lodge room. But your instructions to cancel came later - just 2 weeks before your arrival date.

However, we do believe all of this could have been avoided if you had responded to our 9/17 email inquiry about your new accommodations and asking if it was a true cancellation or if you were moving to another location 'within our resort'. We are a small resort, that has tight capacity on wedding weekends however we are rarely able to refill rooms that are canceled within the 30 day window as guests that were turned away would have booked elsewhere. And while your cancellation left us with an empty lodge room at short notice – *our policy allows for the transfer of this deposit within our property (not refunded, but transferred).

In this case, it appears you canceled your lodge room so that you could move to a large house that your friend had booked and which had room for you as guests. This is the information we needed to effectively process the changes to your reservation. However it was not provided to us prior to this review being written.

Since we cannot accurately link this review to a reservation based on the name attached, we would ask that you get in touch with us to see if there is further resolution to this matter.

Sincerely, Khele Sparks
