This was a great hike to kill a couple hours, you can make it as hard or easy as you want, even drive up. We chose the hard route and were rewarded with fantastic views

Just visited Mt. Philo State Park and really liked the views from the top. We were going to walk up the trail to the top, but its pretty steep and rough, so we just drove to the top and walked around there. Really pretty views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding mountains, and nice places to picnic at the summit. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area, though there is $3 per person charge.

We camped for a rainy weekend at Mt. Philo, luckily we had reserved one of the lean-to's! This is a very small park, only 10 sites. We had the Oak lean to, the ranger said it was the nicest site in the park and I would agree! Very private with plenty of space to put our small tent inside the lean to, as well as our small table, chairs and cooking supplies. The bathrooms are very nice and clean with two private shower rooms. This is the quietest campground I have ever stayed in. The view from the scenic overlook at the top is amazing, and there are lots of adirondack chairs to relax in. The park is close to several towns where there are good restaurants and activities.

Vermont's oldest state park is not the Appalachian Trail - the hike to the top on a well-maintained trail is one steep mile. Or you can walk up the paved car road. Or drive up! The view is wonderful. This is a great little outing with your kids or dog or just to stretch your legs.

My wife and I took our 3- and 5-year-old grandkids to Mt. Philo State Park on a pleasant Sunday morning in early June 2013 that by luck coincided with "Vermont Days," which turned out to mean free admission to the park! The four of us walked about 3/4 of the road to the top of Mt. Philo and back - no mean feat for the legs of a 3-year-old - and enjoyed every step. The kids were fascinated by the millipedes and slugs, which were plentiful along the route. It's a wonderful resource and the four of us look forward to the next opportunity to visit Mt. Philo State Park - maybe we'll make it all the way to the top!
