“Perfection doesn't come close to here”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

My husband and I were visiting family just across the border in New York and decided to stay here instead of one of the chain hotels in the area. We couldn't have been happier with that decision. Nancy and Ralph were incredibly hosts and made us feel welcome and like part of the family. The inn itself is beautifully restored and in an excellent location--off a main road, nestled right in the wood but still easy to get to and close enough to everything you would need. The breakfast was phenomenal every day and they really outdid themselves. I would most definitely recommend this place to any of my family who visits the area frequently.

Room Tip: We stayed in Nathan's Room which had a large sized bathroom and an extremely comfortable bed. Th...

My husband and I stayed overnight at Applewood Manor during a trip to Rutland to view the folliage. The main house was built in the 1700's, with the owners living in a more recent addition. We stayed in Delia's room on the 2nd floor. There are 5 bedrooms; 1 on the first floor and the other 4 on the second floor. We liked our room and it had windows on two sides. It overlooked the backyard pool in the distance, and was right above the two tiered back deck. It was a little too cold to enjoy the decks and wicker furniture on the porch, but on a warmer day, I'm sure the small bistro tables scattered about on the deck, and swing are put to good use. The house is beautifully decorated and had a library and living room in which to enjoy cocktails, converse, or read. The house is very conveniently located on a quiet road .03 miles to the Castletown village store, which has a good selection of under $12 wines, and also to the almost adjacent Blue Cat Restaurant and a diner on Main Street. We bought a bottle of wine, returned, and with the house-supplied glasses, enjoyed the wine in the library. Delia's room was 2 twins made up for us as a king bed, and it and the bath was furnished with the normal supplies and down comforter. It was a nice room. Breakfast was in a well appointed dining room that was originally the large colonial kitchen. The morning we were there, Ralph made french toast with strawberries. There was also a large seasonal fruit cup, coffee, tea, and pastries. Our fellow guests included a couple traveling New England from England, who also spent part of each year in France. It was interesting hearing impressions of their travels. Guests were both 20 somethings and older folks like us. Nancy was an attentive hostess, and herself originally is from Scotland. She made us feel at home. There is a small guest refrigerator for storing VT cheeses and sausages, and other items that guests have purchased along the way. We plan to return again next year, if possible.

If your vision of a perfect B&B includes canopy beds, sumptious gourmet breakfast on the terrace overlooking the pool or around the antique table with a fire burning in the 100 year old fireplace and wonderful, gracious &helpful innkeepers Nancy and Ralph seeing to your every need, than this is the place for you! A nicer place you can not find in central Vermont. Minutes to beautiful Lake Bomosseen or skiing at Killington are close by and easily accessible by major highways. This is truly a 4 season gem located in the quintessential town of Castleton Vermont. Charm, Charm, Charm!! Don't miss it if in the area.

Inn Keepers Nancy and Ralph (and Sampson the Golden Retriever) took great care of us. Applewood is right off exit 5 off Route 4 in Castleton. Applewood is surrounded by flowers and 200 year old Maple treesStayed in "Sarah's" room. Rooms named after the Hoit Family. Built in 1785 you'll feel like you've stepped back in time when you enter the guest foyer. The rest of the house was built in 1805. Breakfast ready @ 8am. Blueberry pancakes one day, eggs Benedict the next with pastries and fresh delicious coffee and juices and fresh cut roses are set out on the breakfast table. Breakfast made to order if one has different tastes.

There's a pool, a sun porch with very clean wicker chairs and a sitting area with a two person swing under an arbor that has many nice climbing plants on it. Adirondack chairs out on the lawn across the driveway from the pumpkin patch. Cumphy beds with feather pillows and an AC unit. Full bath inside a spotless bathroom. -see pics. Nice cozy sitting area with a chess set and many books to read if you want.

If the purpose of your visit is to unwind and sit in the sun and not drive around all day then stay here. One can walk to a great pizza place/deli up on Main.

Room Tip: Some rooms have his n her sink and a tub. -Sarah's room does not.

A very beautiful lodging with very friendly and helpful people taking care of us -- a wonderful experience!

This was one of the best bed and breakfasts I've ever stayed at. The setting was very pretty with lots of flowers, a classic house and a swimming pool. The inn keepers were very friendly and exceedingly helpful.

I would love to stay here again.
