Like some of the other reviews, we booked this place cause it had great rec's from folks in town. It's in a series of connected homes below the Church Street shopping area. The decor is nice, but not all that special.
They give you an appetizer of a small plate of nuts. It's unqiue, and they were tasty, although I was hoping at the prices they would toss a little more our way.
One thing about our meal I thought was quite peculiar, and for a place this expensive, not acceptable. They served my wife her entree, and did not bring out mine for a good 10-15 minutes. We had to grab our waitress, who then explained it was customary for them to do this....
"It gives you the ability to split each of the entrees, you share the first one, then we bring out the other one."
Well, she never told us this before we ordered, and this "custom" wasn't on the menu. My wife, being the optimistic nice person she is, accepted the explanation and we contnued on with our meal (afer finally getting my entree!). I myself sorta thought it may be a line of bull to cover a botched order. We've been to Chinese restaurants from San Francisco to Munich, and I've never heard of a place deliberately witholding one person's meal so there's an "opportunity to share". It's a darn good thing I wasn't allergic to what my wife ordered!
So maybe I'm naive, or maybe they screwed up our order. Either way, Single Pebble patrons should make sure they pick stuff that everyone at the table will like, or make sure the wait staff knows to bring everyone's food at the same time.
The food was good...but not spectacular. It is expensive, and for the money, they don't give you a lot....at $20-30 an entree, would it kill you to toss me a cup of tea? Or a bowl of noodles? We didn't want to drop more major cash on dessert there, so we cut out and had some great ice cream at the Ben & Jerries up the street.
All in all, for us the Single Pebble did not live up to the very good word-of-mouth it has around Burlington. Given the other places available to go in town, we would probably not return to the Single Pebble
