“Stick with what a pub should be "a great beer and good bar food"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2012

Look, I am just visiting and happen to be walking by; decided to go in for a late dinner. The bar tender’s service and the food was what it should be, fast cold beer, within reason prep and delivery time on good wings and soup. So, if you want a steak or pasta dinner, go to a place that specializes in steak or pasta down the street. In addition, the clientele were friendly and having a good time, in a pub, imagine that. I recommend this PUB!

“Good pub food, poorly managed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2012

We've been here a bunch over the years and the pub grub has always been very tasty: great wings, sweet potato fries, Caesars, sandwiches, the usual. They have a wonderful location on Church Street with nice sidewalk seating...so what's the problem?

Well, start with the hostess we had for today's lunch...the least hospitable and welcoming 'hostess' on the street. Both of my daughters who were with me have hostessed and waitressed (one is a former hostess and was a waitress at Sweetwater's Cafe across the street until last week.). I also spent many years in food and bev both in restaurant and catering, so we all know how hard the job is, but also that one does it in such a way that patrons don't know you're having a bad day. This young woman never spoke to us, only waved menus at a table by way of greeting - no smile, not a single word. Watching her I saw she did not crack a smile or interact positively with a single patron there, nor with the people who stopped by asking about tables, and we had PLENTY of time to watch her, which brings me to the next problem.

Time. How long should it take to get a basket of Buffalo Wings, A Greek Salad, a hotdog, and a Caesar? Not sure, but it shouldn't take 45 minutes. Could it be the staffing? Well, since we only ever saw two waitresses handling the sidewalk cafe and they appeared to also be doing some inside tables as well, they are probably equally short-staffed in the kitchen. Our waitresses hustled their tails off and were as friendly as they could be given that they ran the entire time we were there, though we had to request flatware setups and napkins as our meals arrived and no one had bothered to set our table. When my daughter got up to ask politely for extra napkins (wings are messy!), the hostess did not even look at her, just grabbed a handful and stuck them in her general direction. (Hint: consider a job change)

As we watched and ate we saw four or five parties ask to be seated on the sidewalk where there were three empty tables, only to be told they were not seating any more parties outside on a rare 78 degree spring in Burlington...WTH? Where was the manager when that insane decision was being made?

Fortunately we were not in hurry and our food was very satisfying. We did not allow the disposition of the sour hostess spoil our lunch, nor did we take it out on our waitress; we tipped 20% and left shaking our heads. Hope management figures this out...they are not the only show in town.

“Great place to sit outside!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2012

Right on Church Street in Burlington with a nice outdoor seating arrangement. I would recommend drinks only as the food was average or below average. Our veggie nachos had tons of tomato sauce on them and were soggy...yuck. The garlic fried mushrooms were pretty decent. Very nice beer selection and great prices.

“Perfect Reuben, great wings, burgers & view too!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2012

Whenever we visit Burlington, it includes a day's shopping on the wonderful pedestrian-only Church Street, and we make a point to have a meal, or at least a drink, at the outdoor seating of the Church Street Tavern so we can watch the diverse crowd stroll by. Our visit this March happily coincided with some abnormally warm spring days and Church Street was crowded with people enjoying the sunshine. The outdoor seating wasn't set up yet, but we got seats by the front window and could still people-watch. It being St. Patty's Day weekend, I had a Reuben, which was perfectly cooked, and the fries are also perfection. I sampled my son's wings, and my sister's burger, and they were excellent. Service was a bit slow, but we weren't rushed, so we didn't mind, and the food was happily worth the wait.
