Owner description: Board the ferry to Port Kent, New York for a one-hour boat ride offering some of the most beautiful mountain and lake views in the world.
Reviewed April 13, 2012

It was scenic crossing the Lake going back to New York. It was warm enough to out of the car and partake in the beauty that is Vermont.

We've enjoyed the ferries for decades! We took our first trip when we moved to NY from Maine in 1968.

This is a great way to get acquainted with the lake and areas around Lake Champlain and Burlington whether you're a resident of Vermont or welcoming someone to the area. I've taken the "Scenic Narrated Cruise" and the information and views were outstanding. The "Spirit of Ethan Allen" ship is beautiful and vast and allows room for those who wish to be outside on the deck or nestled cozily inside. Tickets aren't expensive; I recommend this for people who are seeking something different as an entertaining 'welcome' for friends/family who are new to the area. (Tip: I don't recall there being restrooms on the ship but they are available on the dock prior to boarding).

This ferry company has three crossings from New York to Vermont but the only one worth doing for fun is the Port Kent to Burlington one. It takes one hour and gets you right into downtown Burlington, VT. The other two are only a few minutes long and are used mostly for business reasons. If you park at Port Kent and walk on the ferry it is very reasonable in price. Pick a nice sunny day and enjoy spectacular views of the Adirondacks in New York and the Green Mountains in Vermont. This ferry only runs from July to October.

Believe it or not, this beats the ferry ride from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard, especially if you are a mountain lover (not to mention it's way less expensive). It is so pretty, serence, peaceful. And if you take the Essex ferry you get to check out the cute little town of Essex on the New York side and on the Vermont side you get a scenic country drive through Shelburne on your way to beautiful Burlington. You definitely need a car for this one though, as it doesn't drop you right into Burlington. I will admit that I have taken the ferry over Lake Champlain and right back without getting off just to be out there on the water... And I would do it again!
