My mother and father both grew up in Burlington, and my grandparents and aunts/uncles/cousins still live there, so I am a frequent visitor. This last visit, I went to do some shopping downtown and had a blast. It's no secret why they call it Church St. - there is a huge church at one end of the pedestrian mall. Church street is reminiscent of old time main streets - two- and three-story brick building, shops on the ground floor, apartments above. The whole area is a pedestrian friendly zone, as thru-traffic is only allowed on two or three streets that intersect Church, but not allowed on Church itself. It is a mix of shops and restaurants and more, with the entrance to Burlington Town Center mall (most of which is underground - well disguised) towards one end - something for everyone. For heavy duty shopping, I'd probably stick with the mall, but it is a great diversion to spend a few hours there. Check out the website for a full listing of stores and events.

I visited Burlington for the first time three summers ago and found it to be one of the most friendly and attractive cities in the country. Part of the reason I feel this way is because of my experiences at the Church Street Marketplace.

It's a downtown pedestrian mall, but it truly feels like the center of town. If you are like myself and are really sick of seeing the same chain stores and restaurants wherever you go, Church Street Marketplace is a welcome change. There are some chain stores, but there are mostly locally-owned stores and restaurants that offer a different experience than what you get in a sterile shopping mall.

The area is safe, clean, attractive, and full of people strolling, meeting for dinner or just hanging out and having a good time. The people-watching is top-knotch. I saw the elderly as well as the young, families with strollers, and a wonderful mix of students from the University of Vermont nearby.

It looks to me as if a lot of planning and care went into the creation of the Marketplace. Yes, it's a retail area, but it doesn't hit you over the head like so many places (visit Citywalk in Los Angeles or Main Street at Disney World for examples of this. Citywalk and Disney are fake worlds that screams "buy, buy, buy". Church Street Marketplace says "come in, have a good time, and if you so choose, buy something that appeals to you".

Visit Burlington and the Church Street Marketplace for something a little different.
