My husband and I came to VT for 4 days of leaf peeping this fall. We're so glad we hit upon the Green Trail Inn! Jane is a great host and an amazing chef! Her knowledge of VT helped us fill our unstructured time and organize 4 great days of sight-seeing. The setting is beautiful and Ariel's restaurant next door is great.

If you really want a B&B that specializes in a great night's sleep and a great breakfast this is it. Hands-down, the best bed we've ever slept in, in a B&B, and the best breakfast we've ever had. Jane, the innkeeper, was not stingy with the food. She also told us the mattresses were something she did not want to skimp on when furnishing the inn. It's in a quaint location, too.

Green Trails Inn is a comfortable small Inn in Brookfield VT. The owner, Jane, has written several cookbooks and is an experienced, interesting and interactive hostess. She is not intrusive, but will chat if you take the time and will offer good local advice if you ask. Jane lives in a private part of the Inn and seeks to ensure that her guests are comfortable.

Breakfasts have an interesting selection of goodies, which change daily. She offers local foods, including fruits, when they are the best choice, but specialty foods when she feels that they are better - fine ham, or thin-sliced salmon, etc., etc. She also whips up pancakes, or french toast, among other things. Cereals are available, but most guess are tempted by the other offerings, which typically include some fine cheeses. The scones are superb - hopefully you will be there on a day that they are available. Coffee is usually ready a bit before the full breakfast and guests are welcome it. Breakfast is an on-going experience - generally it begins about 8 or so, but will be served until the last guest is finished.

The Inn is in a modified older building and Jane has tried to make it comfortable with various improvements, furnishings, etc.. She is practical-minded and has an eclectic collection of furniture, dishes, etc. All very pleasant. The rooms are on several levels, and a few share an outside entrance. And, the different rooms offer a selection of beds, some with twins, some with kings, some with queens. Some rooms have tub-shower combinations, some just showers. It is best to call ahead to confer about the choice of room when you make your reservation. Jane will do her best to help you make the choice you will be most comfortable with.

Jane has recently purchased a property that is essentially across the street on a diagonal (the Fork Shop - as in pitchfork) and is in the process of adding its rooms to those available for reservations. This new property is on the lake that is spanned by the famous floating bridge (which no longer allows automobile traffic, but does allow foot traffic) and adjacent to a little waterfall.

Not all rooms at Green Trails are air conditioned, but in mid-Vermont this is almost never a problem. We visited in October, with nice cool evenings. The bed we had was very comfortable and clearly quite new. There are plenty of fresh towels. Another couple at in the Inn was on roughly their sixth visit - spanning more than 30 years.

Although Jane is a relatively new owner, she is certainly doing things right and continues to make improvements. Hopefully we will have an opportunity for a return trip before too long.

A treat is that Ariel's Restaurant (a very fine restaurant) is directly across the street. Any stay at the Green trails should be accompanied by a dinner at Ariel's (call ahead as it apparently does close for part of November and part of April, but is open in winter and the rest of the year). But, Ariel's is a popular place and so a reservation is a good idea.

What a nurturing, relaxing, and comforting environment! Nestled in a historic village, overlooking a floating bridge, Green Trails Inn is a unique escape. The innkeeper, Jane,
provides an epicurean feast for breakfast that far exceeds the usual B & B fare. She is a gracious host who can enliven your stay with her knowledge of the history and culture of this special part of Vermont. The rooms are simple and comfortable; the experience is rich and memorable.

My husband and I have stayed at the Green Trails Inn on three separate occasions, and will be staying there again this summer (2009). Each time we have come away from the Inn with the feeling that everything was perfect: The rooms are beautiful, the view of the Floating Bridge, which is across the road from the Inn is magnificent and the owner Jane Doerfer is an interesting, and charming hostess who just happens to be a great conversationalist (she's a world traveler and a reader) and a wonderful cook: her breakfasts are varied and delicious and we couldn't have asked for anything better.

My husband and I stayed at the Green Trails Inn for three nights a few months after discovering the owner's other property, the Pelican Inn on Dog Island, Florida. Brookfield is a great central location for everywhere from Woodstock and Quechee to Burlington, Stowe and Montpelier. Jane is a font of information and a lovely lady. Her recommendations were perfect for everything from fantastic sandwiches at a convenience store to fine dining across the street at Ariel's. Breakfasts were beyond description - homemade danish & snickerdoodles as well as all-Vermont products including bacon, cheeses, Greek yogurt, fruits, etc. The bed was soooo comfortable and we also enjoyed sitting in back on the Adirondack chairs. My husband bought me one of Jane's cookbooks for Christmas and we've already enjoyed several of her recipes. We look forward to returning to the Green Trails Inn!

The new owner of this inn, a professional cookbook writer, has created a wonderful experience for guests. When we arrived there was a scratch-baked warm apple pie waiting to greet us and it just kept getting better. Breakfasts featured gourment local cheese, duck trap smoked salmon, fresh baked apple slump and scones, and quality gourment coffee. Rooms were very tastefully decorated with great matresses and pillows and nice bed linens and comforters--our room did have a unit air conditioner but we obviously did not need it in October--we did love the toasty fireplace in the large kitchen/keeping room. The innkeeper is a fun, very interesting lady and made us feel like we were family visiting. We will return!
