“An authentic Vermont experience”
Reviewed October 20, 2011

If you want to experience authentic Vermont, Green Trails in Brookfield is a good choice. The village in the vicinity of the floating bridge which seems to be the centre is delightful and Green Trails is right in the centre. Jane's other property, opposite the Inn is delightful and extremely good value if you want to hire it out for groups of ten people. Jane's welcome was warm and friendly with the offer of cake, drinks and chocolates and she showed us the various features of her authentic Inn. The room we chose on the top floor was spacious and authentic with a separate,if small shower room. Free wifi is available.
We ate at Ariels, directly opposite and had a good, if rather expensive dinner shared with two other diners that evening.
Breakfast at Green Trails was excellent with fresh fruit, home baked cake, specialist bread, freshly cooked scrambled egg with maple cured ham and delicious coffee. Jane couldn't have done more to try to please.
All in all, an authentic Vermont experience which we enjoyed in a small, historic inn with a warm and friendly Innkeeper.

My Grandparents made their home in Brookfield; so the area was familiar and memories popped out of every corner. Our first time stay at Green Trials Inn was totally delightful, with a very comfortable bed, beautiful surroundings, and country fresh air. Our author/innkeeper, Jane, knocked herself out preparing our delicious breakfast with eggs how we wanted them, Vt. bacon, smokehouse ham, danish, souffle, peach cobbler organic bread, Vt. cheese of course, hot coffee and fresh juice.. Since my husband and I are both photographers, we had ample opportunity to capture the early morning sunrise on the lake, the view from the Floating Bridge, and other memorable sights. Terrific experience--we will return! ;0)

Room Tip: We had a queen-sized bed with a private bath which we appreciated.

I stayed at the Green Trails Inn for 4 days in July. This was my second trip, and I plan on returning in the Fall with my mom to see the stunning folliage. Coming from Southern California it is great to see the seasons! This is a quinticential country Vermont Inn with a world traveled gourmet chef for an innkeeper! Jane has written many cookbooks (Including two Legal Seafood Restaurant books- wish she would sell them there!) and it shows in her creative food selection. She is proud to offer grourmet cheeses and such from the local area, and you never get the same breakfast twice which is very nice.

Jane is so helpful and flexible about times and such it makes for a stress free vacation. The rooms are charming and so reasonably priced, with great rugs and other decorations that Jane has collected from around the world and the setting is really idylic. The lake is stunning, and having seen in the in the summer and in the fall with the folliage, and then some snow the next day it never gets boring. Jane also has an entire house called the "Fork Shop" that is a fully converted 200 year old pitchfok foundry with a gourmet kitchen that is also for rent by the week and if I had a larger family or a wedding coming up I would rent that in a heart beat! It is just accross the street ON the lake, and has a double waterfall and stream also on the property. I have never seen anything like it. Finally, Ariel's restaurant is one of the best I have ever been to, and I consider myself a Foodie. Definately go go go! You will have a unique and relaxing vacation and if you do photography, fishing, hiking, antiquing, biking or just sitting by the lake you will not be disapointed! I think that Jane even gives a slight discount to us solo travelers and a "bikers" discount for people who are traveling by bycicle which is SO COOL! I mean, who does that??!!

Room Tip: Book early if you want to go to see that foliage!

This was our second stay at the Green Trails Inn. When we arrived on our bikes, weary and dirty, Jane had a pitcher of cold juice and some berry cobbler waiting for us. She said she knew we would be thirsty and hungry. We sat out on the porch and watched the town activity, mainly neighbors chatting and visiting, and some kids and families swimming down at the lake.
We took a swim on Sunset Lake, followed by a hot shower and dinner at Ariel's, across the street. Breakfast was a combination of mouth-watering dishes and chat with Jane, neighbors, and other guests.
We look forward tp returning!

The previous review does not do Green Trails Inn justice. We loved our weekend there and plan to return next summer. The inn is in an ideal location, on a country road across from a lovely little lake and a fine restaurant with a view of said lake (the restaurant serves delicious food from locally grown ingredients) We stayed in a pretty front room, tastefully decorated with a very comfy bed! Jane, the innkeeper, served us a delicious breakfast--a flavorful cheese souffle and the best french toast I've had in my life! (prepared "creme brulee" style- yum). We were entranced by the beauty of the village and lake, where we took several refreshing swims. But most of all we appreciated Jane's kindness and hospitality, both with us and our 5 month old. If your "trails" take you to Green Trails Inn, you're in for a treat!

I relied on the previous reviews to plan a stay here and I'm going to set the record straight so other people may enjoy there stay somewhere else.

The rooms are inadequate; the windows have no screens so you either close them and roast in the heat or leave them open and become a buffet for the mosquitos. There is no A/C so unless you leave your room door open (women will love this) with a window fan, there is no airflow whatsoever.

The double beds are basically a piece of plywood with a 3" foam mattress on top. You can feel the plywood. Maybe this is acceptable for a 5-year old, but not two adults. The shared bathroom needs to be gutted (why is there carpet in that room??) and rebuilt; it is digusting. At least the beds were clean.

The breakfast table has bars where your knees go so you can't sit squarely under the table and the chairs have these sloping sidearms that painfully wedge into your sides.

Breakfast food was mediocre and the choices very limited, but I was turned off when the hostess was pointing out the different foods on the table by touching them with her fingers as she went.

Take a swim in the local pond? What pond? It's a moat.

Never again.

The "Green Trails Inn" is pure perfection in every way. The Inn is so comfortable and it's setting is truly a slice of heaven. The owner is one of the most interesting and generous people anyone could ever have the pleasure of meeting. If you have the good fortune of being in this area or making a much recommended visit, don't miss a stay at this very magical place. Our family includes a 13 year old boy and 16 year old girl, and we all agree this place is on our must return agenda!!
