“Old School Charm”
Reviewed November 6, 2009

My partner and I stayed at the Latchis on a trip through western New England. It's a cute hotel that brings you back to another time. Sure there are quirky things about the place but that's what comes with history. It was right downtown and we went to an incredible meal at the Shin La, a Korean restaurant across the street, and went to a movie at the Latchis Theater which is connected to the hotel. There are not a lot of place like the Latchis and if you're in the area I think it's definitely worth a visit.

Looking somewhat faded now the fixtures and fittings are in dire need of updating. If you are an Art Deco nut though you will love it. It's a shame that they are not refurbising it. It just seems to be being allowed to slide into a general decline from which it is difficult to see a way back from. The price is a bit high too, can't justify these prices - although I would stay again it would have to be a lot cheaper.
Yes it is going to cost some money, but it could be really good.
Checkout the theatre and bars.

I'm glad you chose to stay with us and thank you for your comments. We are in a constant movement of refurbishment, maintenance and upgrades that do not conflict with the historic nature of the building designation. The current owners of this hotel purchased it in 2003 and are working hard to bring it back to it's grandeur. This is a delicate balance and we are making progress as we can. We are also regulated by the Historic Preservation Society so modern upgrades are handled with extreme care.

As for our rates... property taxes, fuel oil and electric rates are through the roof. Where does it stop?

This was my second stay at the Latchis. The first stay was in a twin room which was a real bargain, but this time I was with my husband and opted for the higher priced room with a double bed. The twin room I had was much nicer with better furnishings. The artwork in our room was scary, 3 paintings of dour looking women who seemed to frown at us all night. I do love the 1930's look, especially in the bathroom, but it might be too basic for some, e.g. exposed pipes overhead.
The location is great, right on Main street with the river out our window which faced Main Street. The very best thing is the deco theatre next door. We saw a film in a small intimate theatre and loved the setting.
I would stay here again, but check out my room before commiting.

As the day dawns, (and it dawned quickly for my husband and I...say, oh...5:30AM) we are roused by noisy traffic and rather a feeling of panic as one would be when locked in a steam room for 6 hours.
This is NOT a deco/eclectic hotel. This is a wannabee.
The rooms must have been converted from old offices. The hallways have vibrated without the aid of any carpet and the clanging of large, heavy metal room doors slammed open and shut like prison doors.
The steam heat would not shut down and we had to open our window in order to stand the heat. (Hence, noise)
The room is NOT deco. It is old, tired 1980 something.

The Good - Nice downtown location, well stocked continental breakfast, $80 for twin room per night, small 20 spot free parking lot out back, free wifi

The Bad - dated room, moldy bathroom ceiling, no outlets in bathroom, rock hard bed, noisy hallways

I wouldn’t stay here again, the room was dingy. This is an old building, but small things could be done to spruce up the rooms a bit.

I just had to laugh, after taking a shower and getting continually dripped on by the condensation that accumulated on the exposed sprinkler pipe along the ceiling.

We quite enjoyed our stay at the Latchis Hotel. If you appreciate the charm of staying in a historical building, complete the quirks thereof, in the heart of a thriving smalltown, the Latchis is charming. You will not find the Victorian overload of many B&Bs, and therefore the art deco style may seem austere. Rooms were spacious and colorful. Yes, beds were not the pillow-topped and the window shades need some patching, but we enjoyed knowing that the rate for our lavender room helped pay for further restoration. Take in a movie in the connected movie palace after supper at the brewpub, bring your sleeping mask and prepare to enjoy a piece of history in this early entertainment complex. Continental breakfast was included, but we enjoyed one of the bakery cafes around the corner.

Shower: correcting a previous reviewer who claimed that the bathroom did not include a showerhead. The Koehler fixtures do indeed look like unfinished plumbing, but if you turn on the water, you will see that the sprayer is hidden within the pipe.

A nice alternative to chains...it has character, nice lobby, simple rooms, big bathrooms, great breakfast, funky town.
