“Room for Improvement”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

We stayed 2 nights at Maplecroft. Overall, the hosts are very nice. Dan is the main contact throughout your stay. We were welcomed in a warm and friendly manner and had a chat before being shown to our room. The house is old and, as it still retains a lot of the original parts, gives it an air of 'time travel' back to the late 1800's which is a nice aspect - therefore, if you are looking for a modern and very brightly lit place this will not deliver those aspects. A very nice touch is that all guests sit at a large oval shaped table for breakfast each morning which encourages people to speak rather than sit at individual tables all quietly. The breakfasts were very adequate and extremely tasty! Our only, but none the less important, area for improvement is that when we returned for our second night stay after being out all day our room had not been serviced i.e. bed made, towels folded/changed etc. We felt that for the cost of the stay this was an important element that was sadly missed.

Thank you for your comments. Since you obviously felt so strongly about the one issue of not getting your room serviced the second day, I would like to make a few comments surrounding it.

Unlike other types of commercial establishements, small B&B's like ours tend to be very personal in our business operation by nature. After all, it is our home where we live and even protecting our own privacy sometimes becomes bit of a challenge. When the guests arrive they ring the door bell and we personally answer the door, greet them and welcome them in. Our guests know who cooks their meals, who washes their dishes, who makes their beds and cleans their bathrooms. They know who takes care of them. When we receive comments like this, we know who wrote them even though they do not disclose their names here, and we know that they wrote about us personally. This lack of annonymity can sometimes create a different kind of chemistry, but this personability is part of the charm of a small B&B. Our guests feel "at home" and that's what we envision about our B&B.

However, with that personable charm come some limitations. We are unable to provide some of the same services that a large inn or a hotel can. For example, we do not have a front desk that's operational 24 hours. Dan remembers when you asked for beer you seemed a bit surprised that we do not serve alcohol, but it does not make sense for us to have a liquior license and sell alcohol when the only meal we are allowed to serve is breakfast. We cannot provide a large menu of breakfast items that guests can order from. We cannot afford to hire cleaning staff or kitchen staff, nor do we believe in hired workers taking care of our guests in our home. Before we opened this B&B, we looked at another property, a larger inn, where the owners lived elsewhere and just managed the books and hired staff took care of all every day operation. We said, "what's the point of having a B&B?"

We do do our best to make it comfortable for our guests in our own way. For those staying an extensive length of time, of course we service their rooms as needed. About 90% of our guests stay one or two nights and they do not require their rooms to be serviced during their stay, which allows us to focus on getting the rooms ready for the next guests and keeping the common areas clean. We respectfully understand that you felt strongly about having your room serviced the second day, your bed made, towels changed, etc. and we are sorry you didn't feel satisfied. We still hope that our unique personable hospitality compensates for all our limitations.

From our own experience of staying at a lot of small and inexpensive B&B's like ours, we do not remember any place that serviced our room every day like a hotel. Never wondered why but now we know.

Its a nice B&B with good breakfast but an unfair cancellation policy. We booked for 3 nights but cancelled the last night 48 hours before the night in question yet they still charged us the full rate for the last night. Although their policy states cancellation times relative to arrival date, a normal person would assume that applies to cancelling the whole booking. If we had simply only ever booked the last night then cancelled it 48 hours prior, we would not have incurred the full rate penalty, yet by actually staying the previous 2 nights we were subject to a full, rather than 50% penalty, which is not logical. I might as well have kept flexibility in our travel plans & not cancelled in advance!

I understand proprietors need a cancelation policy but this was unreasonable to be charged 100% of the last night & we didn't even have breakfast the following morning.

Thank you for your comment. We appreciated your comment you made during the breakfast that it was the best sourdough bread you ever had "including one month in Paris".
We understand your frustration but our cancellation policy is industry standard, not unusual or unfair. It is stated clearly in your reservation confirmation that "if you cancel ANY PART of your reservation more than 14 days PRIOR TO ARRIVAL, there will be $25 charge. Between 14 days and 48 hours PRIOR TO ARRIVAL, 50% of the cancelled reservation will be charged. After that, the reservation will be charged in full."
At the top of your confirmation also says, "Please also read through our plicies below so there are no misunderstandings." So we did everything we could to communicate our cancellation and other policies clearly at the time you made your reservation in January.
You only notified of the cancellation by email the night before your scheduled arrival day. You may think you communicated to us about your cancellation then, but please remember that email is not a good means of communication for such a matter because the receipent may not read it right away. In fact, we only read it the next morning, the day of your arrival.
At any rate, we are sorry that you felt frustrated but you were only charged according to the stipulation, no fault of us.

My wife and I drove through Barre during a New England tour because my mother was born there and her father had worked there as a stone mason. Dan was very helpful in our casual genealogy search, directing us to the local Granite Association, which lead to our contacting a distant relative. Yasunari's breakfast was elegant and delicious, and his evening piano playing was an unexpected pleasure. The house was a work in progress during our stay, but comfortable for all that and the finished parts are beautiful. In short, good people, great breakfast and a beautiful old house that will only get better.

It is a beautiful place - old victorian building, each room has its own style, new clean stylish bathrooms, great breakfast and wonderful owner, who lets everybody enjoy his piano play in the evenings.

Thank you!

We had booked the Tower Room for a Friday and Sunday night. It was an unusually warm and humid Friday which made the second floor room quite uncomfortable, We opened the windows, but the traffic was quite loud. We borrowed a fan from the hallway around midnight. It was disappointing to see a window airconditioner in the closet, which sure would have been helpful had it been installed!. We traveled the next day, but came back for a second night on Sunday. Yasunari had upgraded rooms for us, (without knowing about our fitful sleep the day before) and even though the Mary Mackie room still had no air conditioner, it was a cooler day and more comfortable night. It almost goes without saying - after reading the other reviews- that breakfasts were awesome, Barney cute, and Yasunari's piano playing relaxing. Neither room had a luggage rack or good place to put your suitcase. The outside of the house is being painted..... there are rooms inside that need a little touch up, but overall, it was a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: The tower room is at the front of the house, and has traffic noise, especially if you open the windo...

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry that you had an uncomfortable night of sleep. Typical overnight temperature this time of year in Vermont is in the 50's and we had had several nights when it got down to mid 40's. So, we had just taken down the air conditioners that are least tightly fitting in our old windows to make sure our guests will have an option of closing them during those chilly nights. That day might have been a little warmer than usual and we understand that people are used to different sleeping environments.
We are glad the upgrade somewhat made up for it.

Amazing, wonderful, great! One of the best places I have never slept in! The house is beautiful, the room (we stayed at the tower room) so nice and clean, the bathroom perfect (even if outside the room this wasn’t at all a problem!). You can feel better than at home. The owners pay attention to every detail.
It was really a pity to stay there only for a night!
The breakfast is so good (I’m vegetarian and Yasunari made for me some vegan pancakes!).
They are really nice, gave us many useful info and their dog Barnie is so sweet!
The common spaces are big and so well furnished and we had a pleasant time with other people.
Go there if you can (and stay at least 2 nights)!!!!

Room Tip: The tower room is beautiful and the bathroom, even if outside it, is perfect!

Thanks Yasunari for a great stay in your B&B! You show great pride of ownership in every detail. We felt extremely comfortable and at home. There is lots of space for the guests to relax in besides the bedroom. The tv room is inviting and you don't feel like you are interrupting other guests. The front room offers lots of space to read and of course the piano room is there for all to use. The Mary Mackie room was bright and clean with a huge bathroom supplied with all the extras. Yaxunari was great at providing us options and ideas for places to eat and see. The breakfast was delicious and abundant! We would definitely recommend this B&B to all who stay in Barre!!!
