Sara Widness is such gracious host and went above and beyond our wildest expectations to ensure an unforgettable weekend in Vermont. We loved every moment - from sneaking up the stairs after arriving on Thursday night at 1am and lighting the log fire in our bedroom at Sara's house to enjoying delicious baked apples and home-made granola for breakfast to mountainbiking with amazing 'locals' (organized by Sara) and going hiking up to Lucy's Lookout on the Apalachian Trail...we savoured every moment and hold on to our 'happy moments' now that we're back in the hustle and bustle of the big city. Fine company, ultra-fine linens and oversized beds make for a great breakfast and the best sleep you can wish for when away from your own bed.

  • Liked — The hostess' ability to provide more than just a B&B - she made dinner reservations and even booked day activities for us!
  • Disliked — The room was cold on our first night there, but a log fire was provided which quickly warmed us up.

My husband and I stayed at The Fan House for four nights in September and had a delightful experience.

The proprietor, Sara Widness, is a wonderful hostess who went out of her way to make our stay pleasant. She's an extremely interesting person and a good conversationalist. She's welcoming and engaging without being intrusive, and she enjoys talking about the rich history of her wonderful house and of the area in which it's located..

The house itself is amazing! Gorgeous, original wood floors, wonderful artwork, and beautiful antiques. We stayed in the Fireplace Room, which is very spacious. The bed was extremely comfortable (assuming you don't mind a firm mattress, which was perfect for my bad back!), and the silky bed linens and the Bulgari toiletries in the bathroom are positively luxurious.

The homemade breakfasts, while not elaborate, were tasty and included wonderful fresh fruit and some of the best granola you will ever eat. Sara also used it in her wonderful granola muffins.

Last, but certainly not least, the housekeeping is superb. Everything is spotlessly clean and fresh.

We will look forward to our next visit with pleasure!

What a wonderful getaway! We stayed at Sara's Fan House for 3 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. The house was absolutely beautiful, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the food was delicious. Sara is a wonderful host, giving us great suggestions on how to spend our days. We were able to snowshoe every day in the park across the street. We took a quick drive to a local brewery for a little adventure. It was luxurious, comfortable, and casual all at the same time! We loved it!

We have stayed at the Fan House twice - first time was roughly
2003-2004, and second time was the first week of 2008.

Of the many B&Bs we've stayed at over the years, this is one of our all-time favorites. And the great experience we had on our recent repeat trip confirms consistent long-term success with this B&B. We have also been lucky in that both visits coincided with huge snowfall that just adds to the beauty and character of the entire area.

The furnishings are top notch throughout to provide a very nice upscale country home experience. Bulgari soaps and wonderful bed linens that probably cost more than my first car. Wide board hardwood floors throughout - no wall-to-wall carpeting as so many Vermont inns seem to insist upon. Vintage wood mouldings brought back from years of paint. Lovely brick fireplaces and vintage door hardware. Unlike the sterility found in many "restored" homes, the house is full of character blended with modern luxury.

Sara is a wonderful host. She arranged dinner for us each evening - both great recommendations, and in particular, the Barnard Inn just down the road once again impressed us for dinner - great value as well. The breakfast was also top notch - both food and table setting. Souffle and homemade muffins with maple butter one morning; rustic french toast with maple syrup and fresh fruit the other. A lot of inns just mail it in these days when it comes to breakfast - this exceeded expectations given we were the only two people staying.

The Barnard-Woodstock region is wonderful and this trip we had a little more time to explore the area taking some back roads back and forth to Woodstock which I recommend doing if you have some time. It is an entire region frozen in time with well managed and very limited development.

Sometimes, I'm reluctant to repeat a great trip because I'm afraid the repeat won't live up to the original. No worries here - it was only that much better!

The Fan House is a terrifically well-managed establishment in lovely Barnard, Vermont. If you are visiting the Woodstock area, I'd highly recommend a stay here. A few of the highlights:

-Incredibly warm and welcoming host without being overbearing
-Spotlessly clean
-Beautiful wood floors and other true-to-period elements in the house with modern updates that blend in seamlessly
-Scrumptious breakfast, including some of the best home-made granola I've ever tasted
-Firm bed with luxurious linens made for deep, restful sleep
-Location makes for a diverse variety of natural beauty, depending on the season

These elements and more made for one of the finest accommodation experiences my wife and I have ever experienced in years of travel through the U.S./Asia/Europe.

We spent two wonderful days at the beautiful Fan House. The B&B is just a short walk away from the center of town's lake/state park and quaint General Store--a picturesque Vermont setting. The Fan House provides a luxurious and comfortable stay, without being pretentious. Proprietor Sara Widness is both accommodating and knowledgeable. She was quick to make great dining and outing suggestions, and her breakfasts are fantastic! We highly recommend The Fan House!
