Goldener Hirsch Inn
Ranked #25 of 60 Hotels in Park City
Reviewed March 13, 2007

We just got back to Australia ("the land down under") from our annual pilgrimage to the Goldener Hirsch Inn. As usual, we had a wonderful stay: the staff are courteous and will help with any requirements. The property is ideally situated at Silver Lake Village which is in the center of Deer Valley Ski Resort. This avoids the congestion of the lower altitude Snow Park Village. The Hotel is comfortable with adequate heating and many wood burning fireplaces including one in our suite. The decor is European with authentic traditional furniture. There are a dozen excellent restaurants withing walking distance from the hotel. We mainly dined at the hotel's restaurant. We met many guests at the restaurant who came from all over the Park City area to dine and enjoy apres ski at the Goldener Hirsch Inn. For convenience there is a heated parking deck and we never had trouble driving our two-wheel-drive Hertz Ford Taurus up and down the mountain to the hotels 8100" elevation; there does not seem to be any shortage of salt to put on the roads in the Salt Lake City area to keep them free of snow and ice. We have reserved a room for 2008 and we are confident it will be great stay. Should there be any problems, we know the hotel's management wil be very quick to sort them out for us.

I'll start off by saying I fully agree with the previous reviews of this hotel.... during that time. I've been going to this hotel for many years to ski Deer Valley, and it's always been a great place due to its perfect location to the slope. Now.... it's not even the same hotel.
Where do I even start in describing this experience?

The current management is completely unresponsive to their customers; when we first arrived we couldn't even find a guest services person to help us with our bags.

The elevator since we've arrived smells of either mold, or something else horrible. During our whole stay, it didn’t change.

The breakfast service is now abysmal. What used to be a very nice deal before going out to ski is now worse than a breakfast bar. No one is around to even give you water (which naturally, isn’t available to serve yourself) and each day I went down, the coffee canisters were out.

The current management is also visibly unethical- we had booked our own driver to take us to the airport. Upon getting picked up at the hotel, we soon learned that someone at the hotel received a kickback for referring us to a different company. (The company they used, which showed up 10 minutes before our driver arrived at the hotel, kept breaking down just in the few blocks as we drove away from the hotel!)

The final straw came about when we came back to our room after a day of skiing; we found our door wide open, propped by a towel that was left there by housekeeping.

If at all possible, stay anywhere else but here. For the amount of money you have to pay for a room here, it’s unbelievable how things are. I would stay at a discount chain hotel a half hour away from this location rather than ever staying here again. If you’re looking for a hotel that values their customers and provides quality for the price, check out the stein right next door.

My fiance and I stayed at the Goldener Hirsch in late July. Daytime temps were in ths mid 90's and the entire hotel is without air conditioning. While the rooms were beautiful and otherwise comfortable, the heat was nearly unbearable. All we were provided to combat the sweaty nights was a beat-up fan that did little to cool us off. Our experience here was terrible as a result. It's really too bad, beacuse if the room was cool, this would have been an amazing hotel at an reasonable price.

For literally $25 more per night, our friends stayed at the incredible Stein Erickson next door. Not only were the rooms gorgeous, but they also had air conditioning and thus, were quite comfortable.

Although the room we stayed in was reasonably-priced, it still was quite a bit of money for us to spend and I feel every penny was wasted. I spent many sweaty, sleepless hours cursing the hotel for not disclosing their lack of A/C earlier. In a city that clearly heats up, they need to do a MUCH better job creating a comfortable room for their guests. Seriously, even a Motel 6 has Air Conditioning.

My recommendation - stay here in the cooler months and you'll love it! But, avoid it at all costs in the summer. It's not worth the money.

We had an excellent experience at this inn. It had a great feel- very friendly employees, warm decor (Austrian), newly upgraded bathrooms, yummy beers, great apres ski food and entertainment, great breakfast included in the room rate, great restaurant, easy ski rental/storage and close proximity to the mid-mtn lift. We'd definitely go back in a heart beat.

We just recently stayed at the small and charming Goldener Hirsch Inn, located in beautiful Deer Valley, Utah. The location for skiing is ideal since it's just steps from the lifts. They recently did a thoughtful upgrade of the bathrooms using earth tone marble and granite, which turned out beautifully. The beds were extremely comfortable and the down comforters/pillows and soft cotton linens were wonderful. However, the hotel rooms and restaurant could use a fresher look...the use of pink and green carpet, upholstery and drapery throughout the hotel is tired and overdone, although the hand-painted furniture is somewhat charming and a nice touch. The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially James at the Guest Services desk. Amanda, Tiffany and Brian were also very helpful. Housekeeping was marginal, as we found a five month old, opened and half-eaten package of sliced salami in our mini-bar fridge upon check-in, as well as a partially eaten jar of cocktail sauce. Other housekeeping oddities included not refilling the empty Kleenex containers and not removing old bags of garbage from our room -- certainly not the end of the world but, of course, one would expect this at a Motel 6 and certainly better than this at a $500+/night inn. The buffet breakfast included in the nightly rate was not quite up to snuff. Often key elements were missing from sight (cream for coffee, tongs for sugar cubes, no skim milk for a few days etc.). Cooked breakfast items seemed to be off on a daily basis(pancakes and waffles were soggy, oatmeal gluey, fruit not quite ripe, cold scrambled eggs...) and although this breakfast is included in the nightly rate, we were always left a tab to sign to our room (with an option to add a gratuity!). We ate dinner one evening in the restaurant (having to make sure to get there by 9:00 pm otherwise the restaurant staff leaves!) and it was only average (however the bread that was served was wonderful). The ahi tuna we ordered was alarmingly cold in the center (no, it was not sushi). Not exactly what we expected from a Relais and Chateaux hotel and a surprise for what is considered to be the #2 restaurant in the Park City/Deer Valley area. Since it is a small hotel, expect to hear some noise in your room coming from the lobby/restaurant area, especially on the weekends. If your room just happens to be in close proximity to the dumbwaiter, expect to hear it beginning early in the morning until at least 10:30 pm. The "workout area" is actually a stairmaster and a stationary bike located in an alcove in the hallway of the 4th floor, outside of the 4th floor suite. I honestly can't imagine someone wanting to work out in this shoe-horned location, but it is there if you want to work out. The Hirsch is certainly charming and with a little more TLC (and longer room service hours), could be a really nice place to stay. In the meantime, go elsewhere for breakfast and dinner. And be sure to watch out for the old world door knobs, which double as medieval torture devices if you happen to unknowingly walk into one.

My fiancé and I stayed at the Inn when we were in Deer Valley for a friend's wedding in August. The rooms were wonderful, very clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was nice, and the staff was gracious and helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was very good, the service was excellent. The room is a great deal in the summer time (off season) I am sure that we wouldn't be able to afford it in the winter during ski season. I almost felt sorry for the hotel staff, though, as whoever was at the front desk seemed to be the only one working as reception, concierge and also covering the dining room for the continental breakfast in the AM. However, we only had to wait a few moments and they were always able to assist us. I think they could have used a bit more help, but the person that was there was totally professional. The Goldener Hirsch was a beautiful and relaxing place to stay.

My husband and I stayed at the Goldener Hirsch in July '04 in a deluxe suite. The hotel is beautifully constructed and decorated to look like an authentic alpine lodge in Austria. It has beamed ceilings, antique furnishings, enormous round-topped doors with heavy skeleton keys (which you leave at the front desk) and wood-burning fireplaces everywhere. Having lived in the Alps for a couple years, I was impressed by the authencity and attention to detail that really recreates an European lodge. Our room was enormous with a seperate sitting area with a wood burning fireplace (which the staff will light for you), TV, VHS and DVD player (we requested the DVD player which they placed in our room at no extra charge). I was also pleasantly surprised to find Aveda products in our bathroom. My only complaint was the somewhat small bathtub/shower combo, but it was a minor flaw.

All in all, the hotel is an absolute gem--small and intimate. I was surprised to find the staff to be very personable and friendly. I've stayed at several 5 star hotels and am tired of the "attitude" that often comes with it. The staff at the Goldener Hirsch will answer any question and will address any need no matter how small.

Though a little pricey in the winter (around $900-$1000 a night for our room), you can get great weekday rates during the summer for around $100 for a suite. Check their website at goldenerhirschinn for deals. Also, don't forget to dine at the inn's restaurant. It's truly amazing!!!
