“Closest thing to eastern skiing in the West”
Reviewed November 30, 2010

The people that love Deer Valley are the people that a) want to sit around and eat and just look like they are skiers or b) think they're skiers but don't want to find out their not. The resort is groomed beyond logic. By day's end every groomer is icy and treacherous. The blues from the top of Bald Mountain are packed with skiers that think they're better than they are who don't have the skills to be skiing that fast. I felt like a defensive lineman trying to avoid a pummeling from Joe Blow in his Bogner suit. The off-piste terrain isn't bad except the runs are SHORT. The vertical advertised is misleading. You can't ski top to bottom. You have to ride a ton of chairs and download just to get back to your car.
You can get some vertical over in Empire Canyon but it takes an hour to get there and you'll have to navigate crowded and icy cattracks along the way. One other thing, the kids school is a joke on the holidays. 12 kids to a group??? It's their way of coercing you into giving your child a high-priced private lesson with some young foreign instructor who's no more experienced than your average babysitter.
I guess people rave at this place because they've never had a 'ski valet' help them with their skis or a liftie hold the chair so it doesn't whack you in the back of your knees. They take a couple of runs then go in for lunch. Anyone who is a core skier is going to say BTDT and head to PCMR or Snowbird after one day.

“Favorite ski experience ever! Great town for families!”
Reviewed April 8, 2010

Thanks to all of the regulars and locals who helped with our questions - we had an amazing experience (2 families, 6 kids total ages 2-6) that blew away our previous trips to Vail and Stowe. We rented a house in Old Town near the library - husband walked to PCMR to snowboard while we drove the 4 minutes to Deer Valley.

The kids had 3 total days of ski school at Deer Valley - what a great place, incredibly professional, well-organized, clean. They loved it, and wanted to go back each time (which is not common for us) and learned so much. We had good experiences overall with previous trips and ski school, but the quality of the Deer Valley school seemed much higher, and the organization and lack of chaos was impressive. I was surprised at how booked they were, however - I'd recommend trying to reserve before your trip, we had some trouble with certain days since we're not good advance planners.

I had a 3-hour adult private lesson one day which was excellent (again, recommend reserving ahead, and don't count on getting same-day one or two hour lessons, I wasn't able to book those on the days I tried). Deer Valley is HUGE, so many great runs available at all levels of terrain, and the food is as good as you've heard.

Husband loved PCMR, he's a dedicated snowboarder, the one member of our party who skiied with him one day over there after 2 days at DV said there was no comparison, he loved DV much more. That said, PC seemed to have a younger, hipper vibe (gee, wonder why) while DV was pretty much over-30, families etc. If I was under 30, I'm sure I'd prefer PC.

The town was sleepier and smaller than I'd expected, but we loved No Name Saloon to hang out, and the Wasatch Brew Pub had great beer.

Snow was unbelievable - we were there the end of March and had close to 2 feet that week total. Now I know what all the powder fuss is about. Found great sledding behind some Deer Valley condos, the in-town hill is tiny, only good for 2-3 year olds. Everyone we met was pleasant, the vibe is very down-to-earth, and Gonzaga tubing is fun as well, safe and well-run.

“Snowboards NOT ALLOWED”
Reviewed February 25, 2010

Deer Valley does not allow snowboards! They have nothing on their website and only on the taril map backpage they say "No Snowboards please".
This was really frustrating especcially when you stand all geared up in line ready to buy a lift ticket. They should at least post it on their main website.

“Yes it truly is that amazing!”
Reviewed February 25, 2010

I never thought i had a problem sharing the slopes with snowboarders... until our trip to Deer Valley. Ahhh it is truly a skiiers paradise. The slopes are groomed to perfection, there are hardly any lines, we were able to come in from the cold and have a place to sit every time we wanted to. We skiied two full days, and were not able to hit all of the runs! we are average skiiers, intermediate (blues and double blues) and found the runs to be challenging. There are ski hosts all over the mountains, to help you find what you are looking for, and to help make sense of the immense terrain. There are employees to help you unload your equiptment from the car, which is so nice, a few of them refused to take a tip, which i found to be refreshing! The turkey chilli is fantastic, I also tried a slice of salmon and asparagus pizza which was very good also. I can not wait to go back.
