You've heard the old saying people make the difference. well this is the case with Ruth Chris in Park City. For local people, a steakhouse has to have that edge over the competition for us to come back and frequent the place. Butcher's Chop House sucks, Prime's is a Ruth Chris knock off and overpriced. Edge steakhouse is a remake of a rather good casual dining restaurant in the Canyons and is out of the way for most and pricey for an unknown newcomer to the Park City steak scene.
For you steak purists out there I understand, Ruth Chris is a chain and they lack dry aged steaks. It is what it is but for Park City, this is the best choice. When you call in, ask if the general manager Joe Thornhill is working that night. If so you're going to enjoy the experience. Tell him the SteakSnob sent you. If you dine before 5:30 PM he even has a discounted value menu. Unbelievable in Park City - it is a tourist trap for the most part.
As for seating, if you are there during ski season, request to sit facing the Park City ski slope which is lit up at night. Ambiance is as good as 5 star dining restaurant in PC. This place can get to be a zoo during Sundance and Prez day weekend so plan ahead.
Steaks are fine for a wet aged 28 day steak. They are not spectacular but at the same time they are just fine for what Ruth Chris offers. I find their New York cut to be the most consistent. The ribeye is just too hit and miss in terms of taste and meat texture. Again, I'm comparing my ribeye to a David Burke in Chicago or Maestro's, which is dry aged and not a fair comparison.
The only warning about this place is don't sit too close to the live musician. They can get obnoxiously loud. Then again, if you are with someone you don't want to talk to, your significant other is proposing to break up with you, request to be seated next to the musician. You won't hear a word he or she is saying.
Joe will take care of you at Ruth Chris - as long as he is there. My advice to the hotel, you better be paying this guy top rate because the other GMs at the other restaurants don't do a job as good as Joe does!
