“Your best choice between Zion NP and Bryce NP”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

If you're already past Zion NP and to far away to reach Bryce NP (or Panguitch) than this is your best option. It's right on the junction SR-9 and US-89 in a little "town" where, besides spending the night, there's nothing to hang out for.
The reception personnel is friendly, they even provide you with a Best Western membership card if you don't have it yet. At the reception you also find a little shop that sells gifts.
The rooms are very large and ours had view at the pool and hot tub and had a small terrace. Coffee making facilities are available as well as a fridge. The bathroom is small in comparison with the rest of the room, not suited to be in the bathroom with 2 people at the same time. Downside is that the lights are bright white light and the airco in the bathroom makes a lot of noise.
There is a restaurant on side which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We went here for dinner and the food wasn't to bad. If you are almost out of gas there is a gas station with shop. Fill up the tank here because it will be a while before you see another one.
There is also a small golf terrain next door where you might spot some deer in the morning.
Considering the location this is really the best option for a good night sleep but it is worth it.

I am thrilled you liked the rooms size, and it sounds like you liked everything except the size of the bathroom. The size of the bathrooms vary between rooms. Some rooms have absolutely huge bathrooms.

There are not many hang out place, this is true, unless you enjoy playing golf for only $6 bucks a round, or want to visit some of the historic areas nearby. There are quaint rock shops, historic buildings, short hikes - the Coral Pink Sand Dunes is just up the road.

Thank you for your review.

No major complaints, as hard to find much in the area. Great location to start out from in AM to see Zion. You get to park right by your room door and we were on golf course side so that was pleasant. Restaurant onproperty was good and convenient. Front desk people were not very friendly or accomodative but they did thier job even tho unhappily so.

Room Tip: great place to stay on way to Zion

That is an usual comment about the front desk people. I wonder if you ran into my very tired husband who was covering a shift for someone. He has a very odd sense of human that not everyone gets, but once they do they adore him. Thank you for your review.

Travelling around the canyon and stayed two nights at the Thunderbird Lodge. Service at front desk, restaurant and shops was very good. Our room was a large floorplan (but not all are... so check this out). Furniture is chunky maple/western; very fun. Were on main floor with patio and grassy area for relaxing. Didn't use pool but many did and were very satisfied. The adjacent golf course (9 holes) was a welcomed surprise after being on the road nearly two weeks (without our clubs!). Because we were staying at the hotel, we paid $10.00 for 9 holes plus club rental, balls, tees, cart. Sure the clubs weren't new, but it was so nice just to be out on a course at the base of the mountains. The restaurant is FAMOUS for PIE... doesn't get any better... golf AND pie. Price was right but my only complaint was that their wifi seldom worked in our room or in lobby (think this is common in that area)

Room Tip: Two companions had smaller rooms than ours; perhaps this is an addition?? but our room was quite a b...

You are correct - all but 2 of our rooms have a large floor plan. They had to be smaller to fit the laundry room in. Dang necessities! I am guessing you stayed in the one story units where we are remodeling all those rooms and adding the furniture. It's pricey handmade furntiure, so we were not able to do it all at one time, but we are working hard on this project. I love our golf course in the mountain too! My Grandma who built it, (my Grandpa had already died at this time) was met with the choice of grazing cattle up there or doing something more innovative to save her water rights and she chose to build a golf course, back before they were the in thing. The Ho-made pie, is another story. My Grandpa Jack made the original sign and there was not enough room to put home-made on it so he shortened it. This was way before Eddie Murphy changed the world's meaning of ho. Thank you for your review! You have captured what we try so hard to share with our guests.

I had to average my rating for the following reasons. The hotel got four stars the room was clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful and check in was fast. On the other hand the restuarant only got two stars. The food was below average my dish was not hot and very small portion. Other people complained about food that was over cook. I was surprised since the only other restuarant was very far away. I would go back to stay but not to eat.

Said with a grin: But this site is for rating the hotel! I believe trip adviser has another place to rate restaurants.

I and my husband who do run the hotel have nothing to do with the restaurant, but I do understand your point and will pass your comment along to them.

The restaurant usually gets high marks and there is another restaurant across the street - Golden Hills and the incredible Buffalo Bistro about 6 miles north. This place is an incredible treat for visitors to the SW. They serve buffalo, rattlesnake and other things you can only find in unique places like this. There is also a Subway across the street from the Thunderbird Restaurant. I am sorry you had a bad restaurant experience. Thank you for your review.

Finally able to spend two nights in the same motel and it couldn't have been a better experience. We were fortunately given the room that is handicap accessible (did not request it) and that was recently renovated. The golf course was on one side and a grassy area with patio and pool was on the other side. Friendly desk staff along with the nicest gal in the gift shop that shared all kinds of interesting information about the area. So sad I forgot her name.

We did eat in the restaurant lodge. The staff tried their best but you could tell they were all exhausted from some huge bus tours that had just left. Food nothing exciting but the craft beers were delicious and so inexpensive.

This lodge is quite a distance from the entrance to Zion National Park.....approximately 24 miles...one way. However we were coming from Bryce and when we were planning for this trip there were no rooms to be found in Springdale, which might be a more convenient location to
Zion. But we were still delighted with this motel/lodge.

Room Tip: Rooms near the golf course might be quieter.

"it couldn't have been a better experience."

This is a wonderful compliment! Thank you.

To clarity our location: We are located 12 miles from the east side of Zion National Park and there are 2 entrances - the east and the south. The east is quiet and rustic while the south side is were the cities are found (Springdale, Hurricaine, St. George) Our property is also 60 miles from Bryce Canyon and 85 from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. There are pros and cons as to our location. While the park's visitor center and Zion Canyon are on the south side of the park, there if much more to the park and hopefully all visitors get to see the main section of Zion (SR-9) as well as Zion Canyon. If you stay in Springdale you have farther to drive to Bryce - so it all depends on your plans as to if the location is ideal or not.

Thank you so much for your review! :)

We came to this hotel after long and impressive day in the Zion Park. We didn’t have a reservation and where very happy that we got two rooms as it was already late in the evening. The wi-fi internet access provided free of charge.
The hotel location is very convenient for those who are going to visit Zion and Bryce canyons. The rooms are big and clean. We got a delicious dinner in the restaurant next to hotel.

We stayed two nights there on October 14 and 15 with a third night option on our way back from our trip throughout Utah . Gordon the manger did his best to give us a quiet room facing the golf course away from the traffic noise. We were concerned about trucks .
We had a perfect quiet first night, but not the second one. All of a sudden at around 9 PM we started to hear a loud rambling noise every minute or two lasting 10 to 15 seconds on a stop and go basis. After awhile I peaked outside on the Balcony. It was coming from the outside mounted wall heater unit from the adjacent room blowing up steam.

I called the front office and talk to Chris who thanked me to let her know, but did absolutely nothing about it ! If the heater was broken, then she should have done something about it. If the guests in that room had it turned on, then she should have called them to ask if they could do without it.

We slept without the heater turned on, because it was not needed. In fact in the middle of the night we had to remove the comforter because it was too hot ....even … without the heater not on

Hoping it would go away, we did not request to change room. I regretted it, because it went on all night long. Stop and go noise is worse that continuous noise to try go to sleep.

Was it broken or was it the way it is supposed to work?

Since nobody bothered to let us know... on our way back ... we did not stay in that hotel as previously planned , but continued instead to another Best Western in Saint Georges which was perfect.

My husband Gordon remembers you well. I am sorry the people in the room next to you felt the need to run their air and bothered you and am glad you found a peaceful nights rest for your 3rd night.

Thank you for your review.
