Perhaps we were spoiled as we had just spent over a week hiking 9 other national and state parks in Utah, but this wasn't anything super special. The views of the monuments are nice, but it's basically a big loop around it - long (we have small children), hot, and not a very interesting trail itself (no rocks to climb, no surprising views around the corner)... Again, we are biased in what we like in a hike, but it felt very long to us, with not as much payoff as we like. That said, it's the only hike you can do in this park as a self-guided hike. Frankly, Monument Valley wasn't at the top of our list after all that we saw in Utah.

The trail leads you around one of the mittens, and looking around you have all the great scenery which makes the visit worth while. Here you really ARE there and you wait for John Wayne to ride around the next corner. I would never want to miss it!

We took this with my 7 and 8 year olds. It is 3.2 miles and took us over two hours as we meandered. It was great to see the rock formations up close and so quiet in the desert! The altitude makes it a bit harder if you aren't used to it but the trail was wide and not very steep. The kids loved it although I wish I had brought more snacks. I let them play in the sand drifts at the start of the trail and they thought that was great also. Beautiful walk.

Spiritual, memorable, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity....it will take you longer just because you will take so many photos!!! Wear good hiking shoes, and lots of water. The hike back is tough only at the end thru the sand....you get views like no other of the Mittens, Merrick, 3 Sisters and it is SO quiet. I went in March so beautiful temps in 50-60s but think in summer it would be best to go as early in am as possible. No way to get lost and no problem for a woman going solo. The best and highly suggested as long as you do some hiking in general.

We took this walk on March 3, 2013. Our last morning at Monument Valley we almost left without taking this walk. What a mistake it would have been! If you're an avid hiker/walker, this is an easy one. Everyone else, read the other reviews. The trail is very well marked and maintained, despite the brochure description. Although some reviewers recommend walking the loop clockwise, the trail signs clearly direct you to walk counter clockwise. Although we had toured the valley the day before and the morning was cloudy, so,etching about slowly seeing the scenery change as you walk around the mitten is priceless.
