We took a Back Country tour with Majestic Monument Valley Tour Company, and were simply delighted with our choice. Since I have some issues with my back, I had requested a closed vehicle, and beyond that, it seemed a more pleasant way to experience those roads than in one of the open-air transportation vehicles. We were also looking for a private tour, which they offered for the same price as group tours from some of the other companies.

Jon, our guide, was the perfect person to show us this magnificent area - explaining the rock formations, telling stories as we drove along, being careful to go slowly over the deep ruts - we learned not only about the geography, but also about the Navajo people. As Jon speaks Navajo, we were able to hear some of the language, which has a pleasant musical quality - a lovely addition to the tour. He also played a tune at the Big Hogan, a natural amphitheater, surrounding us with the sounds of the Navajo land, transporting us to a sense of peace and history.

The valley is an incredible part of nature, and seen even more exquisitely with a guide who shares his love and knowledge of the area. The warmth and friendliness of this company, and especially Jon, will stay with us. Thank you, Jon, for a perfect morning.

We visited during the off season. The day before getting there we realized, while you CAN drive through Monument Valley and see everything on your own, you should NOT. Despite what they say you absolutely MUST have a large, four wheel drive vehicle to go in there; we suddenly needed a tour service. Majestic Monument was the only company advertising an off season rate and were by far the cheapest. They took us on short notice with no problem. The morning of the tour we suddenly decided to switch from the basic tour to the "back woods tour;" our call was answered at 7am and they had no problem at all changing our tour to the more extensive one. Granted, we were probably their only tour all day, so they might not be as understanding normally, but I feel like they would be.

Our guide was very informative and was actually the grandson of one of the area's first tour guides. He spoke a lot about his family, life on the reservation, and about Navajo culture and beliefs. We got to see little nooks and crannies that we wouldn't have otherwise and it was so worth it. At one point our guide played a Navajo flute for us in an area with some amazing acoustics- it might sounds kind of toursity, but it was the perfect thing to do at the time. I was amazed at how well he was able to handle the roads too. They were VERY bad in some places and we drove over things I did not think would be possible but he did it with ease. Highly recommend the tour, and highly recommend going in the off season! In the summer the dirt road can flood and some areas become inaccessible.

Over New Year's week, my husband and I took a road trip with the intention of going to the Grand Canyon Skywalk (which we did), but we also ended up with an extra night before we had to head home to Houston. We both love Monument Valley, so we decided to take a chance with the hope that we would find a room at the View (the lovely hotel there and I think it's relatively new about 3-4 years), after dark about 7:30 p.m. We did. We asked about early morning tours for the next morning. The staff said to check at the tour kiosk located on one side of the parking lot, in the morning. My husband did. John with Majestic Tours was available. I didn't expect anyone out that early in that cold. My husband came back with the good news. We went back to where John was waiting in a very nice jeep. He was so nice, and informative and patient, tolerating my request to take pictures of my husband and I, several times. And of course, it was beautiful. Monument Valley is always beautiful. I've been going there since by father took us on family vacations to the western United States in the 60s. In any event, worth the $75.00 per person (more).

In early October 2013 we were privileged to go on a back country tour of Monument Valley. Nothing was too much trouble for our guide, John, who was extremely hospitable and made every effort to convey his knowledge and enthusiasm for his homeland. He also played tunes for us on his Navajo flute. In all an unforgettable experience, and we would recommend the Majestic Monument Valley Touring Co to anyone visiting there.

John was our guide for our two tours spread over two days in Monument Valley. We took the private tours in a covered vehicle. John, a Navaho himself, was both very attentive and very informative, telling us about the Navajo culture and the local landmarks. He was an excellent guide and played some Navajo tunes for us in places where the music echoed off the rocks. He took photos of us in front of key landmarks and even gave us a sample of Navajo tea on top of the bottled water which was proved for our tours. Majestic Touring Co is not the biggest company but it is a relatively new company concerned to make its mark. They were superb on this trip and we highly recommend them to those who want to learn about Navajo culture and see Monument Valley at its best.
