When we first called, the owner's wife pleasantly answered the phone and told us Garry was out on a tour but would call as soon as he returned. And he did. We discussed what we wanted on the tour and had 100% confidence we would receive it.
The next morning, Garry met us in the hotel lobby and was on time - no, he was early. He took us on a private tour of Monument Valley, both the regular 17-mile loop, and off-road where only guides licensed by the Navajo Tribal Council are allowed. From what we observed of other tour guides, he seemed to really care about giving the customer a great EXPERIENCE, rather than herding the maximum number of people through like cattle in order to turn the greatest profit. Bigger isn't always better. In this case, advance research is essential. Also, you may be accosted at the entrance to The View Hotel by gypsy tour guides. I didn't get a good vibe from them.
Throughout the 3 hours, Garry explained the geology, the history of the land and people. He was eager to answer questions and share his love of the land. He interspersed charming personal stories of hunting and fishing with his grandfather when he was a boy.
Garry has worked for several major motion picture companies as location scout, organizer of local services and extras, and so is very familiar with the best places and the best time of day to film the scenery. He brought along his guitar and flute. He played to us and it was magical. But then he sang to us. Oh my word! He has such a beautiful voice. It was a real gift from him to us.
We were interested in filming the scenery, so we lingered in many places to get just the shot we wanted. As we drew close to the allotted time, we told Garry that he could skip the remaining stops and just drive back to The View Hotel (see separate review of this great hotel) so that we did not go over the time limit. But no. He wanted to show us all the sights, and he didn't have another tour that day (it was the off-season). So, he gave us the FULL, leisurely tour without charging more. Here's a man who loves his work.
Bottom line: Going out with Garry of Navajo Spirit Tours was a great way to experience Monument Valley. We highly recommend him.
