“Great Tour Guide!”
Reviewed November 22, 2010

When we first called, the owner's wife pleasantly answered the phone and told us Garry was out on a tour but would call as soon as he returned. And he did. We discussed what we wanted on the tour and had 100% confidence we would receive it.

The next morning, Garry met us in the hotel lobby and was on time - no, he was early. He took us on a private tour of Monument Valley, both the regular 17-mile loop, and off-road where only guides licensed by the Navajo Tribal Council are allowed. From what we observed of other tour guides, he seemed to really care about giving the customer a great EXPERIENCE, rather than herding the maximum number of people through like cattle in order to turn the greatest profit. Bigger isn't always better. In this case, advance research is essential. Also, you may be accosted at the entrance to The View Hotel by gypsy tour guides. I didn't get a good vibe from them.

Throughout the 3 hours, Garry explained the geology, the history of the land and people. He was eager to answer questions and share his love of the land. He interspersed charming personal stories of hunting and fishing with his grandfather when he was a boy.

Garry has worked for several major motion picture companies as location scout, organizer of local services and extras, and so is very familiar with the best places and the best time of day to film the scenery. He brought along his guitar and flute. He played to us and it was magical. But then he sang to us. Oh my word! He has such a beautiful voice. It was a real gift from him to us.

We were interested in filming the scenery, so we lingered in many places to get just the shot we wanted. As we drew close to the allotted time, we told Garry that he could skip the remaining stops and just drive back to The View Hotel (see separate review of this great hotel) so that we did not go over the time limit. But no. He wanted to show us all the sights, and he didn't have another tour that day (it was the off-season). So, he gave us the FULL, leisurely tour without charging more. Here's a man who loves his work.

Bottom line: Going out with Garry of Navajo Spirit Tours was a great way to experience Monument Valley. We highly recommend him.

I found this on Trip Adviser, and signed up based on reviews. They were right. This is likely the best tour operator in Monument Valley. Transportation is in modified 4WD trucks, most with only six seats, so you can converse with the guide.

Meisha was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable, fluent in English, and lucid; qualities which are scarce on the res. She was (perhaps uniquely) willing to share Navajo culture; her mother was white, and her medicine man said that therefore she should share her culture with whites, something most Navajos will not do. Multiple tour trucks tend to arrive at standard locations at the same time; Meisha quickly lost the crowd, and we saw other trucks only occasionally after that. Meisha might be the best guide in the Valley.

Our tour began as a 2 1/2 hour morning tour of Monument valley, with the option to extend as desired. We chose to go also to Mystery Valley, which I highly recommend. Our time was limited, and we could only spend about an hour there; I suggest spending much more time there if your schedule allows. If you are physically fit, wear shoes suitable for scampering around on the slickrock, which actually provides excellent traction, and is very enjoyable.

Navajo Spirit is a bit more pricey than the competition. They are worth it.

“Magical tour”
Reviewed October 24, 2010

We had a wonderful tour of Mystery Valley with Larson and Miesha. They arrived a few minutes early to pick us up at our hotel, and were charming, open, and enthusiastic about our tour the whole time. Near the end of the tour Larson played the flute and Miesha sang with a beautiful, moving voice. We were overwhelmed with the beauty of their music and the setting. They answered whatever questions we had about Navajo culture, and clearly enjoyed sharing their knowledge and experience of the area with us. Mystery Valley itself is an unforgettable place, with a different amazing scene around every turn, unique Anasazi ruins, and an overall haunting, quiet beauty.

“Wonderful experience”
Reviewed October 17, 2010

Our guide was Larsen, and by luck my girlfriend & I were the only people on the truck (bench seats on back of flatbed/covered). We got to know Larsen and his favorite places, and got great background on the reservation. Many of the big operations are stuffed with tourists and the driver uses a mic. to communicate. This was so much better, highly recommended!

“Navajo Spirit Tours is Outstanding”
Reviewed September 22, 2010

We went on a full day tour with Navajo Spirit Tours and loved it. My husband and I were guided into the backcountry by Gary, the owner. We went to sites not seen by other tours and saw beautiful scenery, rock formations, and petroglyphs. He sang native songs and played his guitar and flute for us. In one location, his flute music softly echoed in the canyon, making it sound like another flute was answering back. It was unbelievably beautiful. He personalized our tour and showed us where to take the best scenery pictures. We also learned about Navajo traditions, culture and history as we went through the day. If you are looking for a very special and unique experience while in Monument Valley, I highly recommend Navajo Spirit Tours.
