We visited Monument Valley 17 years ago. So glad to visit here again. You can drive your own car on the valley road, just go slowly. We like to ride out to John Ford Point. It’s an iconic view seen in many western films and on this trip there was a mustang that you could sit on and have your picture taken. It’s so beautiful here! It’s a must see! We had a sandwich for lunch in the View hotel but the restaurant didn’t open till five. If you are driving in from the Utah side you will pass Forrest Gump Hill, where Forrest stopped his cross country run. Great spot for a photo!

Getting off the main loop that anyone can drive and going into the reservation with your Navajo guide is a fabulous experience. The countryside is quite amazing and changing the whole time. You see amazing rock formations, petroglyphs, and huge sand dunes. Unfortunately the latter half of our tour was hit by a storm which brought rain and high winds - not a good experience in an open sided vehicle! We were wet and frozen by the time we got back to the visitor center. Certainly an experience we'll never forget!

We chose a local native guide from Dinehbikeyah= Meaning- People’s Land – 928-409-0088. You won't go wrong! They will cater to you and your schedule, giving you access to private, Native American Land and Culture.

We went over to the tour booth after entering the park and were told about the different tours and lengths. We chose a 2.5 hour tour. Not sure if you can choose which company you get but we had Dinah Bekeyah. Our tour guide was Yvonne. Visiting with my twin sister, we discovered Yvonne was a twin as well so of course we hit it off. The other couple scheduled to go with us didn't show so we basically got a private tour. She was very informative and proud to tell us of her Navajo heritage. We also got to go to spots where if you drive your own vehicle, you can't go. As an added bonus, she played a song on her flute for us as we sat in an alcove surrounded by sandstone. Open air truck so you could see all around. Recommend taking a jacket, especially in spring and fall.

You've seen this sight so many times before in films, but it can't prepare you for seeing it in reality. If you're travelling here, it is best to arrive from the north if possible. Travelling passed Forest Gump point. This will give you a fantastic lead up to your arrival at Monument Valley. You pay a Navijo Park Entrance fee of $20 to enter the park. You can then travel the 17 mile loop road, taking you in between the mesas. We were unsure about this in our rental car but it was absolutely fine in November. A little dusty, but as long as you take it slowly it's fine. The loop road takes about 2 hours, so we did before we checked into the Cabins at the View. Great to have experienced it.
