I visited Monument Valley 20 years ago and had a wonderful guide, Harold Simpson. We visited again and even though they have put up a fancy hotel on the reservation, it is still a wonderful place to visit. Just know that you have to take the guided tours into the valley and these are
conducted by Navajo guides. You can drive your own car to a certain point but need a guide to go further into the valley. It is very rough terrain and the guided trucks are a better choice to see the valley. We learned that you can get a better rate if you pay with cash!!!!
It is very dusty and very bumpy because these are open air trucks. Take water and shoes that
you can walk in the red dirt and sand. We took the three hour tour and enjoyed it so much. The colors in valley are prettier in the morning or early afternoon. They will make frequent stops to point out the different rock formations and there are Navajo jewelry makers at each stop.
Well worth our time and the expense.

A brilliant day here. In the museum of area a lot about the films. Walked out around one of the Butes on a trail a hot 3 mile sin full sun but up close they look so much better and you are walking wher ethe old film stars must have walked and where all those cavalry and Indians chased each other about. The Navajho Indian museum is very good too. we went out with one ona jeep ride on the 17 mile valley trip as it is called not sure we went taht far but fabulous views. we then had a BBQ and rde home at sun set. wonderful weathe rand a wonderful nostalgic varied day.

Most people going to Arizona want to see the Grand Canyon but I like Monument Valley even better. The Grand Canyon is spectacular but the quiet beauty of Monument Valley is so special.

Be sure to take one of the tours into the Park. There are certain areas only the Indians can take you plus they its nice to relax and let them do the driving.

I can't wait to go back.

Dont get me wrong, the Park is an absolute beauty. The drive is very easy even with a normal car and many spots were there for us to stop and take pictures.
We waited the end of the day to see the sun going down, superbe.
The shop at the visitor centre has a lot to sell. I was excited to see a 50% discount, thinking it is was the end of the season.
I bought a kachina for $22, with the discount to find out later in the day the same kachina was to sell for $20 at goulding (without discount!).
I am not even sure it is legal in the US to double the real price and put it on sale.
Go for the view but dont buy anything

We are glad we decided to stop over and take a jeep tour. The scenery is fantastic and added a whole new dimension to our exploration of parks and monuments in Utah. It will be a memorable part of your journey--if you are anywhere nearby, you owe yourself a trip. Whether you drive the 17 mile dirt road or take a tour, you will have an experience of a lifetime. We opted to take a tour (reviewed in Trip Advisor) and it was a wise decision.
