We stayed here as a couple in our late 20's for 1 night in the campground part of the lodge. The location was excellent right in the middle of Monument Valley with only a 10 minute drive to the 17 mile scenic drive loop. We stayed in the red rock casita, which was basically a large static caravan. It had a open plan kitchen and living area with sofas, breakfast table and chairs, TV, cooker, large American fridge freezer, washer, dryer and cutlery. The bedroom was a separate room with wardrobes, Bathroom with bath and shower. It also had AC in the kitchen part, and a good sized decking area outside with table and chairs, where we had a BBQ and watched the sunset. The casita was abit old and dated, didn't smell very nice when first entered, needs refurbishment, but was large and clean. The campground had lots of facility's ; supermarket, fuel station, fitness center, shop, indoor pool and the lodge had a restaraunt all very close by. The biggest downside was they did not serve any alcohol due to Indian law, and the nearest town where you could get it from was 20 mile away, so stock up before you get there! The view from where we stayed was very good, the best place for the view was the visitors center which was right next door to the View hotel, but to stay there was nearly double the price of the red rock casita we stayed in at $168 including all taxes. You could book a range of tours from the lodge reception. I would definitley recommend staying here for anyone visiting monument valley.

Room Tip: Make sure you stock up on alcohol before you get there as nearest town to purchase was 20 mile away.

Goulding's Lodge and campground management and staff is so pleased to hear that this guest enjoyed their stay in one of our "casita" units. Historic Goulding's Lodge is a large property of one square mile. Not only does the property have regular motel rooms, but also family style units with full kitchens. These units can be a nice change for guests on vacation who are staying in a different motel every night. Yes, Monument Valley is on the Navajo Indian reservation, so the sale of liquor is prohibited. So, just remember, BYOB!! Thank you for your comments....

We stayed one night at Goulding's and had a very comfortable, clean room with a fantastic view of Monument Valley. It was nice to sit on the balcony in the evening and watch the sun go down. This is the place for western movie buffs....John Wayne's cabin from one of his films is on location along with the original home and trading post that the Goulding's lived in before the lodge was added...meals were great and on the generous side! We enjoyed every moment there. I can't say enough about the staff in the restaurant...they were all very gracious and friendly.

Room Tip: get a balcony facing Monument Valley!

Goulding's Lodge management and staff is so pleased to hear that this guest enjoyed every aspect of their stay with us at our historic property. Established in the 1920s as a Navajo trading post, the Goulding's museum contains a large collection of Monument Valley artifacts and movie memorabilia. The movie location from "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" is part of the free Goulding's museum. Thank you so much for your comments!!

As part of a trip through West America, I stayed two nights at Goulding's Lodge. Rooms very good quality, more hotel then simple motel. And most important, all rooms with terraces and view on Monument Valley as seen on several photo's posted. View hotel has closer views, but I consider this definitely second best, and easier to book then the View. Restaurant for dining was not good: a steak medium-rate/pink was always served as gray. Second night opted for a pizza from the foodcorner at the gas-station, eat it on the terrace and enjoining the magnificent view of Monument Valley by sunset.

This was the most expensive campground we stayed in during our 3 week trip to the USA by far. We were camping in tents and the ground was very hard with no grass and lots of stones. Tent pegs would only go in about 3 - 4 inches before hitting rock.

Most of the tent sites are close to the road, and there seemed to be pick-up trucks going by for most of the night.

The worst thing about this campground though is the stray mangey dogs roaming the site; these forlorn creatures looked like they hadn't been brushed or bathed since birth and my family found it quite upsetting (we actually reported them to an animal care center in nearby Kayenta).

When we stayed the swimming pool was out of order, although we were allowed to use the pool in the nearby lodge.

On the plus side, the site is located very close to Monument Valley so if you do stay, make sure you get up to see the sunrise over the Valley. This kind of makes up for the shortcomings of the site.

Goulding's campground management and staff wants to thank this guest for taking time to share their comments regarding their stay with us at our campground. We apologize for any discomfort you may have experienced during your stay. We are pleased to hear that you did take the initiative to stop and inform the Navajo animal control center about the stray dog problem in the Monument Valley area. This is an issue that we have been trying to find a solution for for many, many years. Hopefully your input will help. Again, thank you for your comments as they are of assistance to the Goulding's campground staff to be able to provide a higher level of service to future campers....

Monument Valley lodge is an old historic building in a beautiful area. The room has the Western feel with beamed ceilings. Rooms are small, but lodge does not have many room. The rooms are clean with all conveniences. One choice of restaurants, but good food. Bonus is every where you look is the grand Monument Valley. You are in the middle of a beautiful wonder of nature. Recommend jeep tour. The drivers are very charming Navajo people who will tell stories and sing.
We loved the location and the Navajo people. We could understand why the Goulding's fell in love with this place and John Ford filmed many of his famous westerns here!

I stayed at Gouldings after a wonderful time in the Monument Valley. We turned up late, although we had booked the camp site months in advance, and we were given our spot only to find out that we had been DOUBLE BOOKED with another large group. When we went back the reception staff had left. We were forced to sleep in the car park.

In the morning we were told that there was space for us and we were not sleeping in a car park (even though my tent was next to a car and a tractor). They were rude and dismissive when dealing with the issue.

Relating to facilities the wifi didn't work, the showers didn't open till 8 (which is great when you have to leave at 8.00am) and the steps were so uneven I fell over, twisted my ankle and cut my knee.

I am very disappointed with this camp site as Monument Valley is an incredible place to visit. If you come and visit STAY AWAY FROM GOULDINGS
