“A gem of a place.”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

I decided to stay here for my time in MV.
Service from the start was excellent, the check-in was painless, the staff were friendly, rooms were big with excellent views, beds were comfortable. Food quality was excellent, every dish was served hot and the service was excellent.
Also liked the museum.

Highly recommended, great value, would stay there again.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the 2nd floor, you'll get a better view of Monument Valley, especially the...

We were going to book at the Hampton inn In Kayenta on Expedia. Found Goulding's on Trip Advisor. Much better option Rooms and view were great. Can see the sunrise over Monument Valley from your Balcony. Staff were extremely helpful and delayed the departure of the Tour about 10 minutes so we could check into our room and then go on the tour. Tour guide gave us a great insight into Monument Valley. Food in the restaurant was fine.

We have stayed at the Goulding Lodge twice in the last five years and we always really enjoy it. The rooms were all upgraded between our first and second trip. I included pictures. The views from the rooms can't be beat. It is fun to check out the museum with the kids. There is plenty to do there. We do not love the restaurant. The service is very slow and the food is not great. You probably don't want to eat there if you are in a hurry to get to Monument Valley. You would be better off to take a picnic to Monument Valley and eat there. Overall we have had great experiences at the Goulding Lodge. We would definitely go back.

Gouldings Lodge was a very nice place. The room wasn’t huge, but it was well-decorated, comfortable, and luxurious. Every room had a small patio or balcony which afforded sunrise and sunset views of Monument Valley, which is about three miles away. But this place is more than a hotel. There’s a museum; a small separate building where they show the John Wayne-starring- 1939 film “Stagecoach,” as well as a restaurant and a gift shop featuring Native American arts and crafts.

The Goulding’s Trading Post Museum starts off with a recreation of the 1930s trading post established by Harry Goulding and his wife, “Mike.” There’s also a ‘Movie Room’ filled with stills, call sheets, posters and other items from some of the many movies which filmed here, from Stagecoach to Back to the Future, Part III. There’s also a detailed topographical map of the area, where one can identify different movie locations. The ‘Josef Muench Room’ boasts a variety of artwork by the photographer whose work Harry Goulding caught director John Ford’s eye with. Upstairs are the Goulding’s living quarters. Even if you don’t stay at Gouldings, consider stopping at this museum, which operates on donations, which go into a scholarship fund for local Navajo youth.

The “Earth Spirit Theater: isn’t much, basically one room, but it’s adequate for showing “Stagecoach,” which is appropriate since the Gouldings were instrumental in getting this movie to film here, the first to do so. We felt the film should have been called “Lost in Monument Valley,” because it was obvious from our visit earlier in the day that the filmmakers had their actors going back and forth all over Monument Valley, even though they were supposed to going to different places. Guess folks are supposed to think the entire west looks like this.

The Gouldings empire also includes a campground, gas station, car wash, and grocery store. I had an opportunity to visit the grocery and found that it wasn’t touristy at all and actually had some decent prices. We would stay here again without hesitation.

Great room with a great view. Arrived after dark so on opening the curtains the following morning was a 'Wow'. The room was a good size, clean and comfortable. The food in the restaurant was good, tasty and plentiful - shared my leftover rack of ribs with a stray dog that was giving us the sad, hungry eyes just below our balcony in the morning!!

We went on the day tour with our Navajo guide, the sights were spectacular. Early December and we had sunshine and bright blue skies. It was a great day out ............. well worth a visit. I have been wanting to go to Monument Valley for years and it did not disappoint.

Gouldings Lodge is a perfect place to stay if you are exploring the area and at this time of year was very reasonably priced.

Goulding's Lodge management and staff is so pleased to hear that this guest enjoyed their stay with us at historic Goulding's Lodge. November-February is a great time to visit Monument Valley and overnight at Goulding's Lodge. During the winter season, weather and lodging rates are generally mild. Sometimes a dusting of snow, but very minimal. It's very peaceful and serene any time of year, but the winters are especially quiet. We thank this guest for their wonderful comments!!

We stayed here on 29th, January on an out of season stay. After arriving in Momument Valley with the spectacular scenery, Gouldings did not disappoint. The recptionist was very helpful and we ended up chatting about soccer for some time! The room was clean, warm and had an excellent view of the valley both in the evening and in the following morning sunshine.
The on site restaurant was good value and the staff very attentive.
I will stay here again and would recommend this hotel!

A little out of our budget of road tripping but expected it in this very remote location. The room was beautiful and the view was great. The bed was Amazing! Good stay. If you are travelling grand circle going to Gd Canyon you'll find cheaper motels on the way so get yourself a treat and stay there as it's the best location for monument valley!
