Home away, away from home. Hogan is clean and pretty. Both the owner and his son were very helpful and good people.

I would highly recommend staying at the Firetree Inn if you would like an experience of Monument Valley that goes beyond treadmill tourism. My husband & I spent 3 special nights at Firetree in September 2008.
20 Mins from the Monument Valley entrance & the landscape is no different. The 2 hogans that make up the Firetree Inn were apparently built by the inkeepers & their Navajo friends - & they are the real Navajo deal ! Both are warm & very peaceful - at night you can see the stars through the opening at the top.
My husband & I had the larger of the two hogans to ourselves (it accomodates upto 8 - I think) but I would recommend asking for the smaller hogan which sleeps just two, if you are a couple - the interior is like something out of a story book.
The bathrooms which are in a separate building are basic but new & clean. The common room where you eat breakfast is welcoming & there is computer access if you need. The innkeepers have been in the area 30yrs or so & are very respectful of local traditions; they can tell you a lot about the area - & they also seem to attract very interesting guests.

Staying at the FireTree is not cheap but my husband & I felt close to the landscape & had a taste of Navajo culture which no hotel or motel could offer.

This lodge makes clear how remote it is in its publicity, and superficially the location seems attractive. However, charming it is not, and before deciding to stay, look carefully into questions such as the toilet facilties, the noisey air conditoner, the need to keep the door of the hogon closed to avoid the cat using your bed, the very small site with little facility for sitting around and relaxing, the apparently limited opportunity for actually getting into the wild country sorrounding it (which actually is thinly populated and rather run down) and the general air of delapidation.

This place may be to your taste if you like basic accommodation but don't expect comfort or much relaxation.

It's interesting that they require full payment in advance with the booking. We arrived, looked but did not stay and lost our money.

We were looking forward to Firetree and Monument Valley as the highlight of our 4 week trip to the USA, and weren't disappointed.

Our hosts were welcoming, and being away from civilization was exactly what we we were looking for. Firetree is effectively a bed and breakfast, so don't go if you want a 4 star experience. We found it very peaceful- the highlight for us being sitting outside our hogan at 4am looking at the stars- absolutely magic. No sounds of civilisation, though it is actually physically not that far from Gouldings.

Our 10 year-old daughter loved it, because of the owner's 5 cats, and the new experience (for her) of sitting in the common room in the evening- no television, bliss!!. Our only regret was having only one night there- in hindsight, we would have skipped Las Vegas.

We stayed here for one night whilst on honeymoon and found it a very interesting place. The hogan itself was magnificant - and the hosts (mother and son) were very friendly. Breakfast was fine but you don't really stay here for the food - its more for the experience of sleeping in a hogan.

One word of caution - a cricket decided to make noise all night which made sleep very hard - it's the downside of staying in a place which is as different as this one but probably best to bring some earplugs.

If you want a taste of life on the Navajo reservation in a more traditional sense - this is the place for you. The proprietors, David and Diane Harris have lived in the area for many many years. They had a local Navajo craftsman build a traditional style hogan beside their home. The hogan is furnished beautifully. The ambiance of the interior is in keeping with the old west style and rustic elegance, and the bath is in the main house. Breakfast is served in the main house as well, and there is a wonderful common area to be enjoyed. Diane and David are a wealth of information about the area and are fantastically interesting people to know.

The Inn is located down a state road just outside of Monument Valley with spectacular view along the way. Once you make your reservation, they will give you easy directions to the place. The setting of the Inn has a backdrop of beautiful cliffs and the red rock landscape --- a true escape and nourishment for the soul.

Go - enjoy - get into the moment - and you will be touched by the experience FOREVER.
