“Not inexpensive but few choices in Monticello”
Reviewed August 23, 2009

At $89 single, not inexpensive. Standard motel, with good sized rooms, clean, free wi-fi, microwave. fridge, coffee maker, free dessert at Lamplighter restaurant down the street. Desk plus lounge chair plus table with two chairs, plenty of seating. August 09 major road construction in front of hotel. No views or ambiance, just a motel. Ice maker broken but ice available at front desk. Computer in the lobby, out of order. Young lady at the desk said she did not have the authority to change my room to a courtyard one, Avoid rooms 127 to 131 as they are on a concrete alley. Room 129 had a one bar wi-fi reception but I used a Cat5 cable to a wall outlet for good high speed internet. Rm 130 couldn’t get wi-fi and also had telephone problems. They provide a little folder that lists TV channels but it is all wrong. I never could find HBO. Standard continental beakfast with pre-made waffles and hard boiled eggs. No newspapers but it was a Sunday. There is a motel, Monticello Inn, which looks even worse across the street. I wouldn’t search this motel out but if you have to stay in Monticello, what can you do?

Hi, we had originally booked the family room at this motel as a stop over after a day at Needles Park, while we were in Moab we wanted to extend our stay by one day. I needed to contact the Wayside Inn and see if we could bump our reservation back by one day, I was told that we could. Upon arrival we were told that the motel was full and that we did not have a reservation. I explained my situation to the desk clerk Megan ( I believe), she was friendly and called the Manager to let him know of the situation. He came down to the motel and figured that when the clerk that made our change realized that we had booked the "Family room", which was not available, she tried to call us at home in Canada and had no other way of contacting us, and left it at that, so we ended up as a no show in the system and were charged for the room. Scott, the Manager called across the road to the Monticello Inn and booked the last two Queen rooms available, this at no charge to us. We were told to use all the amenities of the Wayside Inn, pool, hot tub and breakfast, as the Monticello Inn does not offer these. He also said that he would refund us our $$ (done) so that our stay would be free of charge, because this would have replaced the free night that Best Western was offering with two stays. I work in the customer service industry and deal with mistakes all the time, Scott handled this situation with Excellence and I would recommend this motel based on Scott's integrity. PS. Who ever cooks the hardboiled eggs needs to cool them quickly in cold water so that they are easy to peel.

The highway right in front of the motel was being upgraded. Lanes changed each of the 4 days we were there. Our reservation was for an oversized room. Initially we were given a smaller room, but I noticed the difference in the schematic drawing immediately & asked questions. They only had one oversized room left - it faced the road under construction which had a lot of truck traffic. Hubby is deaf & I use earplugs so I thought we'd be OK. I was, but hubby's ears heard the noise, but he wouldn't use earplugs. Other than the potholed road causing problems, the room itself was OK. We augmented the included breakfast with things we had on hand. I did enjoy the hardboiled eggs. They didn't have perked decafe, but did provide instant decafe. A computer was in the lobby for clients to check email.

The rooms were large, clean and well kept. The beds were adequate and the room had a refrigerator and microwave. As others have mentioned, the breakfast was minimal, but the price of the room was also low compared to the hotels in Moab. I would recommend this motel to those visiting the Needles area of Canyonlands. Also, we had a good meal at the M & D Ranchhouse restaurant in town.

I agree with other reviewers, this is just another average motel, but it was clean, quiet, roomy and comfortable. I did have a few problems though, the microwave didn't work. The faucet in the bathroom was very hard to turn on and off and the shower valve was installed backwards, so that hot was cold and cold was hot. It took me a while to fiqure out how to get hot water out of it.

First off, the main picture shown above on Tripadvisor.com is incorrect. Go to Bestwestern.com for correct pictures. Stayed here for closest access to Needles district of Canyonlands (about an hour away). Nice & clean room, good size, plenty of hot water. Breakfast was standard fare--toast,englishmuffins, pre-made waffles, cereal, oatmeal, donuts, juice, coffee, tea, bananas but they also had hard boiled eggs which was definite plus! The only complaint was traffic noise from the street which is probably unavoidable since this is a 1 or 2 street town (bring earplugs). Also, the door to my room kind of jams a bit so it was a little hard to lock. Besides those 2 minor issues, all else went well. This town is really small & did not see hardly any places to eat--ended up eating at the Taco Time which was probably the busiest place in town.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff & management were very friendly. A great value for the price.

  • Liked — Clean rooms and pet friendly
  • Disliked — I wish all hotels would switch to the down comforter/white sheet bedding
