“A Home Away From Home”
Reviewed April 13, 2007

The Homewood Suites in Midvale is a very solid, quiet and affordable ($99 a night with a AAA discount) three star property with the added bonus of rooms with a separate bedroom and living rooms, full breakfasts each morning and light dinners Monday through Thursday evenings.

We used the property as our home base for a ski vacation and made the relatively short commute to either Alta or Snowbird most mornings. The advantages of staying down in the valley instead of up on the mountain are two fold: (1) you sleep better at a lower altitude, particularly if you're a flat-lander and (2) it is much cheaper.

The breakfast provided is not exactly gourmet, but it is certainly as good as a local coffee shop and usually has lots of options, like eggs, waffles, cereal, yogurt, fruit, coffee and orange juice. You won't go hungry and you'll be prepared for an exhaustive day of outdoor activity.

The light dinners included tacos, nachos and chilidogs. Not the most nutritious meals, but a very cheap option -- it's free -- and not a bad way to go for your first night, when you are tired and don't feel like going out for dinner.

They have a much-needed indoor swimming pool and hot tube -- the latter is great to soak sore muscles at the end of the day.

A previous reviewer wrote there was a weird smell at the property. We thought it might have been a problem with the heating and cooling system. Our A/C -- yes we actually needed it in April -- didn't work in our room and it had a strange smell. The staff was accommodating and put us in an upgraded room and credited us one night's rent for our trouble. Scotty -- the main maintenance guy at the hotel was particularly helpful -- he attempted to trouble shoot the problem and he made arrangements for us to move to our new room.

A previous review also said not believe the hype about the fireplace suites. They are natural gas burning fireplaces and a nice little extra for cold winter nights. We tested ours to see if it worked -- which it did -- but didn't use it because it was too warm.

I understand that the property is about 12 years old and it seems to be well maintained.

We'd return again.

My experience with this property has made me reconsider my loyalty to Hilton ... that is for sure (but that has more to do with the HH Diamond Desk than this particular hotel).

I tried to book this room on HHonors points, and was told that I needed "48 hours" to do so. I requested that the second night be on points since it was still over 48 hours until check in time ... but then the truth comes out ... it is not "48 hours" but 2 calendar days PLUS the amount of time from midnight the night before.

Okay, not happening on points ... so for $142 a night, I expected more. The exterior is bland, the interior is standard issue Homewood Suites, but the elevator had an interesting aroma (marijuana?), and the halls had the smell of stale cooking.

The rooms are clean, and well maintained. The kitchen is adequate. In our particular room the faux-fireplace did not work (do not believe the hype about these being fireplace suites), and the refrigerator was very noisy.

Parking and access are adequate. I might return if on points, I would not pay this amount to come back.

We have stayed at over twenty Homewood Suites properties nationwide and expected the usual superb accommodations, so booked ahead. This property is very rundown and in need of renovation. In fairness, I can say that it was clean, but shabby with old furniture, low stained ceilings, and the entire place smelled musty. We checked in and immediately checked out, and ended up at the Hampton Inn and Suites near the airport. What a great property! For less than Homewood we have a king suite that is beautiful. Another option would be the Homewood Suites downtown SLC, which is a new hotel, but was booked.

We stayed at the Homewood Suites February, 2006. This was our first trip to Utah. The room was fantastic. I love the fact that there was a seperate living area with a couch, chair and TV. The room was very clean, the hotel employees were all very friendly and helpful. The indoor pool and jacuzzi were great. This is a great place to stay if you plan to ski at Alta, Snowbird, Solitude , or Brighton. We used the bus service. It was convenient, but make sure you verify the schedules and the bus stops. They change depending on the time and the direction you are going.

Our only disappointment,if any, was the breakfast but it was free and very convenient not having to go out to get breakfast. Breakfast consisted of oatmeal, cereal, scrambled eggs, pancakes, mini-bagels, bacon, sausage, fresh oranges, and beverages. I was hoping for something sweet like danish or cake, and for some breakfast potatoes!

All in all, we would definitely recommend Homewood Suites as a home away from home.

My family and I stayed here for Spring Break to ski. It was wonderful! Very spacious and clean! The bed was comfortable and the carpets were clean. Free hot breakfast every morning and little snack meals in the evening. Free good coffee all day long and free newspapers every morning. Free wireless internet in your room. 2 t.v's, large bathroom and kitchenette in every suite. Very nice overall. I was very pleased. We even received free chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven upon check in. I will definitely stay here again. I loved it. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating.

We stayed at this hotel in early September, 2004, and had a wonderful stay. Can't say enough good things about this hotel. It was super clean, had a good-sized room, free internet access (only one computer available) and the best free breakfast for our entire trip. It's on a quiet street with free parking.

We got the room on a Priceline bid of $45, but the staff was still super nice to us and never mentioned Priceline. We asked for and got two double beds. The breakfast had both hot and cold items. Wish we could have stayed longer, as the swimming pool looked very inviting!

This will definitely be our hotel of choice if we find ourselves in Salt Lake City in the future.

The hotel is only 20 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City and we much, much preferred staying away from the downtown area.

Highly recommend this hotel!
