There's not much in Mexican hat so with limited choices hotels charge more than they'd be worth elsewhere. The room was average and the location nice. Be sure to ask for a room facing the river. But I thought the price was high for what you got. Unfortunately you're close to Monument Valley so I think that drives the price up. I'd stay here again but only if I had to absolutely had to stay in Mexican Hat. However if you can make reservations early, about 20 miles away is the Valley of the Gods B & B which is a great place to stay in a fabulous location for only about ten bucks more.

Room Tip: Stay in room facing river

Our second floor room on the back side of the building overlooking the San Juan river was large with two queen beds, a microwave, fridge, TV and WiFi. The WiFi was free but required a code provided by the front desk that allowed 20 hours of use and which had to be renewed for longer access. At just over $150 per night, with tax, for two people, it was a bit pricey but probably one of the better of the limited choices in the area. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. Hours for the restaurant connected to the motel were iffy and, though it was open while we were there, the menu was VERY limited. The Swingin Steak restaurant just up the road was an outdoor affair that served very expensive (but probably very good) steak, though we did not eat there. Best restaurant was the Old Bridge Bar & Grill just down the hill from the motel.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back second floor have the best views and are probably quieter.

Let’s be honest, there are very few choices. Supply and demand rule the roost here. We spent hours deciding where to base ourselves for traveling in this part of AZ/UT. After reading a LOT of TA reviews, we chose this place. If you do read a LOT of TA reviews you can pretty much guess at what you are going to get. That being said, for our summer visit it was mostly European guests- as usual. (This time many more French than Germans though.) Check in was mostly smooth with the obligatory stoic Indian clerk. The room was as expected from the other traveler photos posted- no need to post more as it’s fairly well represented already. Basically it’s a motel and all that being a motel entails. It almost always depends on your neighbors. Our neighbors on this trip were considerate enough that it was decent. The room was clean. (Anyone talking about sand/grit lying about, please take a look at the surroundings!) The a/c was loud, but worked- can’t have it all. There was a fridge for those who read the reviews beforehand and bring their own food. No real problems with the shower or hot water. Of course, the stand out of the place is the pool which was extremely crowded, but nice. When it’s not so crowded you can hear the river flow through the canyon and that is simply amazing under a desert nighttime sky. The river is simply another reason to stay here. You can park yourself on the balcony (there are some chairs) and listen to the river and the quiet. That’s what makes this place special. Yes, it’s extremely expensive- supply and demand. But after touring this part of the country and seeing the other choices that we might have had, we are glad to have chosen this place.

Room Tip: Read the reviews

We are so happy we stayed here rather than paying the ridiculous prices to stay in the extremely overcrowded hotels in Monument Valley. The room was freshly remodeled, very clean, large, super quiet, and comfortable. The whole place is being remodeled inside and out, and the pool overlooking the river will be sublime once it opens. The staff was so pleasant and friendly. Lobby is very pleasant place to gather and has a computer for you to use which was a big bonus when you can't get cell reception. They just opened a restaurant attached to this property. Again more friendly, helpful employees working there too. Short menu with good reasonably priced home-cooked food. Recommend eating there.

Room Tip: If you pick the ground floor you can park in front of your door. Or pick second floor rooms for the...

We stayed here for two nights, while seeing Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley National Park. It was pretty clean and nice to have the outside door to making hauling all our things into the room. We met another couple and it was nice just relax outside in the evening. The pool was not opened while we were there. But looked like it might be fun. It appears they might be making some improvements to the property. The location is nice. We did eat at the swinging steak....I thought it was way over priced, but there's not much to choose from.

I was thinking about my trip to Monument Valley almost 2 years ago and was looking to book again until seeing the property current closed for season. I enjoyed staying here 2 nights, scenic location in which property looks over the San Juan River, to which one can walk down. This seemed a bit pricey but a nIce alternative to $$$ lodging at Monument Valley, and, pet-friendly which were my goals. And, who can argue with 1 of the most photgraphed roads in the world for the drive south to Monument Valley? I stayed until dusk at Monument Valley and drove back to this property at Mexican Hat, stopping at pull offs to enjoy the evening solitude, stars and watching aircraft above. One can eat at Gouldings and still be in back to Mexican Hat in like 20 minutes, or, there is the Swinging Steak next door to the property or restaurant down the hill upon the river at the San Juan river. Yes, this is remote, this is southern Utah; desert, I found the room comfortable with white comforters and a nice area off the lobby. Try replicating the price in Monument Valley, and compare lodging options as one drives north to Moab. I'm looking for when the motel opens again for the season, plan to be back before the heat rises later in year.

Hat Rock Inn is no frills motel right on the main road, but has nice, clean, and large rooms, which look newly decorated. The swimming pool area is really nice and overlooks the river. There is no restaurant but we walked over to Mexican Hat Lodge and had a Swingin' Steak, which I would recommend! I would stay here again!
