Allow a lot of time to take in the awesome beauty of this area. Antelope and mountain goats, red rock formations, and the crystal clear green waters make this a memorable visit. Must see is the dam and the dam tour. Great fishing and boating areas, the lake is extremely large.

This 150 mile round trip from Green River around the Gorge was a big disappointment for us. We had expected to see the Flaming Rocks experienced by the original explorers. What we did find was a long meandering fishing reservoir and dam which supplies electrical power. Only the very tops of the "Flaming Rocks" can now be seen since they are now inundated with water. It is like what would happen if they flooded the Grand Canyon...only the top small, albeit "somewhat flaming" layer, remains in view.

The west side drive is boring and dull but has excellent access for fishing boats and some nice camping facilities.

The east side drive is much more scenic and worth while even though the flaming rocks are now mostly flooded. I would take this drive for scenic photographs, fishing and camping but not for the "Gorge".

The complete circle drive takes several hours and takes you into Utah.

We just returned from our 2nd road trip with our new travel trailer. We picked a spot halfway between Denver, where we are and Bozeman, MT, where our friends were, not knowing what to expect. We were very happy with our destination. Flaming Gorge Reservoir is a very unique geological part of the country. There were incredible rock formations everywhere. The trip around the lake by car is amazing but in order to get the entire picture you need to either have or rent a boat at the marina. We rented a little pontoon boat at a very reasonable price. I've heard the fishing is out of this world there. Someone actually caught a 51 pound lake trout, (the record). We camped at Lucerne Valley Marina for 4 nights and even though we don't fish, we found plenty to do. If you only have one day, I would say do not miss the Visitor Center at Red Canyon. Also a great 2 hour road trip is Sheep Creek Canyon. (Unbelievable rock formations).

Be sure to camp at Red Canyon. You are right next to the canyon. Go after the season to avoid all the racing power boats and kayak Horseshoe Canyon.

We drove from Rock Springs, Wyoming and it took us an hour and a a half to arrive the visitor center (the one on top of the hill, passing though the red canyon lodge). The view is amazing at the red cayon overlook. We started hiking at the visitor center and turned around at the red canyon lodge restaurant after a very good lunch. Highly recommended for a day trip.
