I still laugh about how we were driving along and I was going on about why would someone call it flaming gorge and then the scenery changed.
My jaw dropped to my knees and things became so beautiful so quickly it was hard to imagine. The cliff faces and the resevoir all combine for some spectacular pictures.
If in the area a must see sight.

This drive was unexpectablly cool. We anticipated much different terrain but found a great mountain drive over a pretty high mountain pass. It sort of felt like we were on top of the world. On the Utah side of this drive the State has the geology of the area well marked with roadside signs.

This Lake from end to end is something to see. though it is cold most of the year it has great fishing and has wonderful views both from the lake and above it. The Dam tour is fun for families too.

Breathtaking and beautiful - you will be in awe of the natural beauty of the area. We took a hosrbacking riding trip to the rim of the Red Canyon Outlook, drove through the Sheep Creek area and simply enjoyed the peace quiet and natural beauty.

A definite stop if you are in the area.

Flaming Gorge was a planned one day trip which turned into 2 full days just driving and taking the various sights. We didn't know what to expect since nearly all information on the net centered on the various activities there, not the geology or sights. The visitor center at the Dam has lots of info, so stop there.

Day 1, we started in Green River, WY and drove the west side of the park via highway 530 down to Utah. Took a little cutoff after Manila, UT called the Sheep Creek Loop. Do Not miss this - unexpected scenery and it takes you though canyon, cliff and some mountains. We drove to the Red Canyon Lodge to have lunch and the great staff gave us the info on the best places to see. Although the Red Canyon Visitor Center was closed (shuts down right after Labor Day) we walked to the overlook and were met with an incredible view. We had the whole place to ourselves. There were bighorn sheep and mule deer everywhere.

Drove around the dam, took pictures and headed up HWY 191 back to Rock Springs, WY. Nearly dusk, & the sun setting, we had the most delightful views of herds of pronghorns all along the trip.

Day 2 we took the opposite route south - along 191 again. We cut off on the dirt road to Firehole Canyon which takes you along the east side of the river. We saw 1 car the whole 3 hours we spent on that road. I don't think we could have had a more peaceful drive. When we stopped to take photographs, there wasn't a sound. The best part of the trip, no people, scenery and quiet.

Passed over the dam again on our way south. The staff at the Visitor center at the dam were very knowledgeable. They had quite a bit more info than we had been able to find elsewhere.

A little FYI - we found accommodations and restaurants in Rock Springs were much better than Green River if you are entering the area from the north.
