Yes, House Rock Valley Road is a road rather then an attraction in itself. It curves sharply off to the right just before the rather splendid and dramatic rock formations known as "The Cockscomb" (they are wave-y & red like the cock of a splendid rooster)...the rough road is an insight into the local terrain and stops along the way can take you to many excellent sites like Buckskin Gulch, the Wirepass Slot Canyon & even pictographs. Returning to Route 89 you could continue thru The Cockscomb and soon come to a stop for The Toadstools - a short 1-mile hike to some very unlikely looking rock formations that look like - huge exaggerated mushrooms. We often recommend a full day tour along Route 89 beginning in Kanab, going past Page to Rte 12 and returning on 89A - guests always return stunned (french guests took 1100 photos in one day!)

“Dirt road providing access Vermillion Cliffs National Monument”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

House Rock Valley Road, or BLM road 1065 is not really an 'attraction' per se but a dirt road starting off Hwy 89 between Kanab, UT and Page, AZ and going through Vermilion Cliffs National Monument on both Utah and Arizona providing access to attractions in the area, including Wirepass trailhead (Buckskin Gulch Slot canyon, Coyote Buttes North permit area), Lonetree trailhead (Coyote Buttes South), Stateline campground, condor viewing site etc. It connects to HWY 89A on Arizona side. The road is entirely unpaved and can be impassable when wet. In any case, driving 4WD is recommended due to uneven surface and sand. There is no water in the area, and nearest city is 40 miles away.

Having said that, driving down House Rock Valley is a great way to see Vermilion Cliffs area, we visited Coyotes Buttes South & North and camped at the stateline campground for the night. The road was completely dry in November and we did not encounter any problems with 4wd SUV but still had a bumpy ride with all the stones and sand. It can easily get muddy if it rains making it challenging to get through.
