“So. Utah hiking”

South Coyote Buttes

If you want to see something different, about every 3 feet it seems, then So. Coyote Buttes is the place. REMEMBER- it's the desert, so timing is everything. Some of it's hiking areas do need permits. I would'nt recommend the Summer. It gets HOT here. But if that's the only time you have, WATER~WATER~WATER...and maybe umbrellas to help keep you in the shade. Almost NO SHADE areas for relief. Do your prehike facts gathering. It is a grand place to see, but survival of you is most important. We've been hiking this area for 13 years. It's huge and will take a lifetime. But it could also take your life. See it..survive it..photograph it..No cell phone service..bring a hand held mirror for signaling if you are unable to walk out. Maybe a hand held horn would be good also. NO TRAILS. So a call to The BLM should be in your plans before you come.

I wanted to do something special during our trip out west...I found it. We hired a tour company (see raving review of Dreamland) to take us out to South Coyote Buttes and White Pocket. Just spectacular scenery. It's hard to believe that this is there. I got some incredible shots. I went on-line and got our permits..pretty easy!

Dont believe it? Check out my pictures of late March at :

We also went to The Wave ( the reason why we travelled from Europe in the first place! ), but this area is spectacular, particularly in the late afternoon!

Relatively easy to get permits for, but tough to get to unless you have a proper high clearance 4WD. Use an outfitter like Dreamland Tours or Paria Outpost!

If you dont get to go to The Wave, go here! It is no second class citizen, believe me!

It is way less difficult to get a permit for South Coyote Buttes than for the Wave. We actually got it on a spot in Kanab - they will provide you with the maps of the area and all necessary updates. Make sure you get 4WD - we managed it with a rental Ford Escape just perfectly fine, make sure to check profiles of your tires though, shouldn't be worn out. It would be smart to come prepared with a shovel in the trunk just in case, as we did (didn't end up using it). We took 1017 (turns to 1066, then 1081 - just follow the road, there are two gates you have to open and close yourself, because of the livestock) - the whole ride was about 40 minutes. It is a very deserted area, we only met two cars throughout the whole day and had it all for ourselves.
Be prepared and bring a lot of water, it is a desert so it can get very hot, but also quite windy. The views are just spectacular!!! It's a perfect place for photographers, but also for anyone else. One has to see it - words can't describe!
One tip - bring your gps with you. We used it to get back to our car - after few hours out there, it all looks the same and it is easy to get lost. The hike from the parking area to the site takes about 15-20 mins because of the deep sand.

this is such a beautiful area, full of surprises around eveyr corner! Incredible!!! so many colors out in the nature!!!
Please note you need a permit for this one, and you can not access it without a propoer vehicle (a rental SUV, also not a 4WD is not sufficient! you can get stuck in the sand!!!!) We took a guided tour here which was wonderfull.
