My sister and I stayed at the cabins at Best Friends for four nights. The good things were, first, the amazing setting. There are four cabins about a mile from the visitor center. They are clean and quiet. The setting is spectacular. You are surrounded by high mesas, juniper trees and red sand. It is quiet and secluded. We each had our own cabin which was good because they were very small. The cabins consist of a double bed, a bathroom and a small sink, fridge microwave area with a counter tucked under some cupboards. The room was so small I had trouble putting a yoga mat down to do some stretches. I felt cramped. My sister, however, liked the coziness of the space. There was literally nowhere to sit except for at the counter, but that was a challenge because your face would be in the cupboards. The bed was the other option for seating, or you could sit outside on the shared patio - nice but, in July, hot as heck. The bed was soft and sank in the middle. I have a bad back and had to sleep on the floor - again, a challenge given the space. We paid $75 a night. A real bargain if you can use the bed. People said the cottages are bigger with a sitting area. I hope the beds are newer !
The best thing about the trip was volunteering at the sanctuary and seeing first hand that the money we donate to them is well spent. This is a truly impressive place. If I went there again, I think I'd either stay in town (Kanab) or try the cottages with a reassurance that the beds would be newer.
I give the lodging a 3, the sanctuary a 5.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has become the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals. Nestled in gorgeous Angel Canyon, it’s a sight to behold — and a place of compassion unlike anywhere else on earth. On any given day, around 1,700 dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and more call Best Friends their home-between-homes. Here, they’re given love, medical care and the chance to be adopted. Cottages: Shaded by the red cliffs of Angel Canyon, near the Best Friends Welcome Center, are eight guest cottages. Accommodating up to six people, each cottage has one bedroom containing two full-size beds, sitting room with sleeper sofa, kitchen, 3/4 bath (shower stall), and a balcony with a view of the horse pastures. Cabins: A smaller alternative to the cottages, the cabins accommodate one to two guests and are also conveniently located on Sanctuary property. Each has a studio setup with one queen-size bed, kitchenette and 3/4 bath (shower stall). RV Site: Two fully-equipped RV sites offer a spectacular view. Both are complete with 50-amp electricity, water, septic tank, 35' concrete platforms, and an unobstructed sight line for satellite TV. There are no length limitations; however, the sites are not pull-through, so you must be able to back your RV into or out of the site. These sites do not have shower or restroom facilities. ... more less
