Whispering Sands Motel

Hanksville is the definition of a tiny junction town, but is very convenient for the little known but very attractive Capital Reef National Park. It's a dry and dusty place with little but a couple of motels and gas stations, and a house boat park (?!) As with so many of these small town eateries, the diner across the road (Blondies) seems to close when the staff feel like it.

On the plus side, the motel is well back from the road, hence very quiet. The room was a reasonable size, and had a fridge, but no coffee maker. Bathroom was fine, bedroom reasonably clean. Wifi is advertised, but I could only connect by walking to the office (which was closed) and sitting on the bench out front. Tricky in mid-summer sunlight. Reception desk was ok (when manned) but not overly welcoming.

I'd stay again in view of the lack of anything better. The driving to it through Capitol Reef, and from it through Glen Canyon, is outstanding.

If this motel were in a larger town, I'd probably give it 3 stars. But Hanksville is kind of the middle of nowhere. We wanted to stay there for a few days, and were glad to find the Whispering Sands. If I decide to stay in the area again, I would not hesitate to stay here.

Having said that, you should understand that Hanksville is not a tourist town, or much of a town at all. You can't really hold that against the motel. If you want to go out and see things near Hanksville, but you don't want to stay in one of the more developed towns that would require considerably more driving time to return to in the evening (so that you can spend a few more hours doing something other than driving back to your motel) then this is the place for you. But if you're looking for stuff to do other than sleep once you get back to town, this may not be the town for you.

For specifics on the rooms, ours was pretty far from the office, not in the 2 story section. It nice and clean, and well maintained. And unlike what a previous reviewer experienced, our room had a coffee maker and coffee. The internet access was quite nice to have in such a small and out of the way place, but the signal was very weak in our room, and I often had to stand next to the window to get any reception. This leads me into the service, which was ok but not spectacular. The folks at the front desk seemed friendly enough, but for instance we didn't get directions on how to use the wireless, and had to go back to the office (which had closed) to ask. And while the room was cleaned every day, we didn't always end up with any towels, and one evening when we came home grungy from hiking all day we ended up having to call several times and wait a few hours to get towels. Maybe they had to run a new batch through the washing machine, but they didn't say that, each time we called they said they would bring them right over. The office also closed pretty early every evening, so that we always felt like we were imposing when we asked for anything (like towels). Oh, and one last downside: there was an overpowering plug in "air freshener" in the room. We unplugged it every evening (and opened the windows to try and air out the room) but each evening came back to find it plugged in again.

I'm starting to sound a lot more negative than I actually feel about the place. These are fairly small complaints -- there's room for improvement, but as I said at the start, I'd gladly stay here again, and I wish a lot of other small Utah towns had motels this nice!

Whispering Sands is in a very small town. Whispering Sands was clean, comfortable, quiet, and reasonably priced. I would definately stay there again.

The Whispering Sands as well as Hanksville was a low point on our Southern Utah trip. Thank goodness we only stayed here one night so we could see Goblin Valley State Park and take a hike. The motel is okay but the reception by a teenager was unfriendly and cold, and the place lacks for any charm. They dont even have coffee in the room or the office. Also avoid Blondies restaurant across the street-its as grim as Hanksville.

Travelling between Capitol Reef NP and Natural Bridges, we stayed one night at this small crossroad town. Our Whispering Sands room was very clean and quiet. The owner/hosts were very friendly and accommodating. Also recommended: Breakfast and dinner at the homey and very casual Blondie's across the highway from the motel.

The Whispering Sands is a nice, clean place to stay when passing through this part of Utah. The owners are friendly and accommodating, and the rooms are spacious, clean and well-maintained. They even have free, satellite-delivered (slow) wireless internet service for guests.
