“reach the slot canyons”

Reviewed May 11, 2013

Went in spring - but it had been dry and the road just graded so the drive on this gravel road to Dry Creek Gulch was totally fine, if a bit dusty and bumpy. Lots of pot holes near the parking area may be hard for regular cars to clear. No prob w/rental jeep.

BLM graded the rough spots at the 4wd end. "Hole in the Rock" is now accessabile with high clearance 2wd.

After the third cattle guard there is a place to park and a trail on the east side of the road marked with a cairn. You follow the cairn marked trail til it ens in Harris wash. Turn left, and soon there is a fork. Take the right which is a smaller wash with deeper sand. Follow this wash. It narrows with half a mile into a really exceptionally beautiful slot canyon. Navigating the slot is difficult. Some parts are not even as wide as a good pair of hiking boots and you have to slide in sideways. There is a spot where you have to climb up to get past a stone wedged in between the narrow walls. The slot is less than a quarter of a mile long, but it is exhilarating. A German hiker was ahead of me, and he was younger and more athletic and was able to climb the last sheer drop to the end. He was giddy with the pleasure of it.

The road is about seven miles east of Escalante, Utah. The surface is not too bad, but it is very dusty. The trail to the Zebra slot canyon is 5 miles long round trip. It's a lot of up and down and some walking in a wash. Attention needs to be paid near the canyon as the trail is not well marked. Some climbing is required in the canyon, and it is very tight. However, you can go in 50 yards or so without any problem and then return. The trailhead is next to the third cattle grate down the dusty road.

There is soo much to see and do along this 40+ mile dirt road. Devil's Garden (apx 6 miles down the road) is a great place to stop and explore. The slot canyons are definitely worth the trip, and the hike down into Lake Powell from the road is tough, but worth it as well.
This road is THE WORST AND MOST BONE-JARRING dirt road I have ever driven on!! I was seriously worried my Jeep would not return intact. We considered turning around a couple of times, but am glad that we didn't. Spooky Gulch, Dry Gulch, and Peek-a-Boo slot canyons were worth the drive!!
I am glad my car came back in one piece!!
