Escalante is a cool destination and there were not a lot of reasonably priced homes to rent there. We were very comfy in this modest ranch in a lovely quiet location. There was a little deferred maintenance, but everything worked well. The kitchen was well equipped, the house well supplied, and the wifi and tv worked too. There is an evaporative cooler, but no AC. This worked fine for us, but might be a problem in really hot weather. We loved the porch with a nice view, but were eaten alive by no see ems. We were told they are only about for a very short time each spring, so are usually not a problem.
Clean, comfortable, convenient. Great place to stay as a base for exploring the wonderful outdoors around escalante
This airbnb rental was spacious, clean, well-equipped and on a very quiet road close to stores (even a wonderful organic grocery called Mercantile Grocery). Enjoyed sitting on the front porch on very comfortable outdoor furniture just staring at the mountains and sky. A truly relaxing place, and the host was very nice in her communications. Midway between Bryce and Capitol Reef (in my opinion, a bit far to drive to and from Bryce or Capitol, especially after a long day of hiking--we stayed right outside the park at Ruby's--but definitely doable). So appreciated the serenity of the house, especially after staying in the Ruby's cacophony. Close to slot canyons, which are not to be missed unless you suffer from claustrophobia. Really enjoyed this home.

A spacious, comfortable, well equipped house on the outskirts of Escalante, Southwestern Retreat is midway between Bryce and Capital Reef and affords great access to the hikes and sights along RT 12, Hole-in-the-Rock Road and Sheffield Road. This is the third year time we have enjoyed this house in the season when the aspen are in color on Boulder Mountain and the cottonwood are turning along the Escalante River. Sunset and sunrise from the porch afford a pleasant beginning and end to a Utah day well spend in the canyons and high country a short drive away from the door.
We found the southwestern retreat to e immaculately clean and so comfortable for our family visit to escalate. The living area was perfect for watching dvds after our long hikes in the amazing Grand Staircase Natl Monument. The kitchen was well set up fo making meals and the bedrooms worked well for our 4 person party, though as many as 6 people could also be comfortable. The only suggestion I would have is to have the porch light on, as the place was a bit difficult to find in the dark.
"Southwestern Retreat" is aptly named. Upon arriving, we were delighted with the view from the porch, and then pleased with the tidy, comfortable house. We're already talking about when we might arrange another trip, this time bringing our adult children with us to enjoy the surrounding area from this great base.
We stayed here for 2 nights in May of 2016 and everything was great. This is an older home and not in perfect condition but it's clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. My husband and I were traveling with our adult son and it was great to have a whole house with 2 bathrooms and a split plan so he had one side of the house and we had the other. The kitchen is quite large and was well stocked with more than we could possible use. The house is located at the edge of Escalante (which is a tiny town) so it's incredibly peaceful and the skies at night are beautiful. We were thrilled to have access to the full size washer/dryer as we'd encountered rain and really needed to get some clothes cleaned! Sandy was very easy to work with both prior and during our visit.
The TV had some basic channels (but not ESPN) and the internet worked very well which was great since we had very little cell coverage (Consumer Cellular/AT&T).
Make sure to stop at the Visitor Center in Escalante. Lots of useful information there including road conditions. a lot of the roads around here are dirt/gravel. If you are itching for wine or something more than 3.2 beer, the state liquor store is located in a tiny corner of Escalante Outfitters.
