“Basic accommodation to visit the area”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

We made a last minute decision to visit the Flaming Gorge to fish the Green River and were able to get accommodations at the Flaming Gorge Resort, which was our second choice after the Red Canyon Lodge. It has basic motel style rooms (without air conditioning), which were adequate for an overnight stay, if you plan to spend the bulk of your time elsewhere (which we did). They have a well equipped store that includes a fly shop, and the restaurant serves hearty breakfasts and solid fare for other meals. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: The rooms on the upper level have good views.

This year we were invited to join my sister's extended family for a fly fishing trip in the Flaming Gorge area. She warned us about the accommodations so we weren't expecting much. Our group had a block of four adjoining rooms at the top of the hill. They were adequate. The weather was very warm (around 100 degrees) and the units do not have air conditioning but thanks to cooler temperatures overnight and opening the windows, it wasn't too uncomfortable. There is a swamp cooler in the room, but it made the room feel damp so we didn't use it after trying to have it on one day. The rooms had been recently "refreshed" with paint. The furnishings were adequate. Our mattress was quite comfortable and there was a good selection of pillows. I also appreciated the old fashioned bedding of sheets, a blanket and a bedspread since it was so warm that only a sheet was needed.

Through the resort we had 5 fishing guides and we all caught a lot of fish on the beautiful Green River. I had never fly fished before and the guide was so helpful and patient in teaching me. The trip took all day--we met our guides at 7:30 and the last group returned at 5:30, totally worn out from a great day on the river. On the second day, my husband and I decided to explore the area rather than fishing again and there are many hiking trails in the area plus many scenic lookouts.

On both days our group gathered on the porches in front of our units on the plastic chairs provided by the resort to enjoy some beverages and snacks before going for dinner (at another resort).

The one thing I wish the resort would tackle to make their units better would be the plumbing. It took a long time to get hot water, then while in the shower, just after getting the shampoo on, the water got so hot I couldn't stand it and the old bathtub fixtures were hard to turn. I eventually had to turn the hot water all the way off and then back on to get the temperature where I could continue my shower. My husband said the same thing happened both times he showered too.

There is a restaurant at the site but we traveled with a cooler for some milk for our cereal which we ate on the porch each morning.

The price for these accommodations is a bit high, but in this location there aren't really any better options.

Room Tip: It sounds like the resort is in the process of improving their rooms and haven't gotten to the n...

Usually I read the reviews from others and decide who had an axe to grind and who was overly generous with their praise but after reading the reviews for the Flaming Gorge Resort I honestly have to say that I agree. Yes, it is basic lodging. Yes, the staff are very friendly. Yes the prices are reasonable considering the area. And Yes, the grounds are well kept. We stayed in the motel building at the top of the hill. The room was satisfactory but without frills. It was equipped with a portable swamp cooler, not an air conditioner, that made the room more like a sauna than a comfortable bedroom. The lodge quickly sent a man to try to fix our problem and eventually things did improve but probably mostly due to our opening the windows. Breakfast in the restaurant was fine and reasonably priced. The waitress was very friendly and took care of our needs. Would we go again? Possibly, but we might try other facilities in the area for a better comparison.

We drove through the most incredible vistas from Park City, Utah to Dutch John ....like nothing we have ever experienced. Virtually no car or vehicular traffic, just splendid and unique scenery. If you are planning a visit here, it certainly is NOT to go for the hotel. No, you are going to see the Green River and fly fish or white water rafting. The resort at first glimpse sort of shocked us, because it is in a word, basic....extremely basic. The first room was a small room with l small window and absolutely no counter space to put anything. My husband went and asked if something else were available and they suggested one of the 'apartments'. The first one was on the first floor and we could hear all of the footsteps above us; off we went to move once again, this time to the top floor up a very steep flight of steps and hot...but once you are there, you are not going anywhere else. We made do, but as stated, we were there to see Green River and we met our excellent guide 8 in the morning the next day and did not return until 13 hours later, too exhausted to do much else but look forward to the dining hall set up. The guests are mostly groups of men or men with their sons and grandsons, but some families also. We would not have missed this remarkable area, but wish they would update the rooms. The food is okay, staff is very, very nice, but you dread going up those steps into that dreary space! We did visit the one other 'nice' hotel the next day, and frankly it is not much better. There are single cabins there, but the food is similiar and we took luncheon there. There must be a certain charm to this place because at the end of our visit we said "perhaps we will go back next year to fly fish again"......perhaps! RTD

I stayed in the condo area of the resort for a couple nights during a fly fishing trip on the Green River. The condos have one small bedroom (two beds), bathroom, living room with a love seat and hide-a-bed sofa, TV, kitchen, and a dining area with table. While the resort is very conveniently located for recreation activities around Flaming Gorge, it wasn't exactly a stay at the Marriott. It reminded me of staying with your grandma or aunt who is not particularly well-off -- the beds were old and kinda lumpy, the carpet was worn down, and all the furniture and other appointments could use replacement. However, we were out on the river all day anyway, and I was so tired at the end of the day I would have slept soundly in the bathtub. These are definitely no-frills accommodations, and not inexpensive -- we defrayed the room cost by getting a roll-away bed and cramming four guys in there.

Room Tip: No elevators -- might want to ask for a ground-floor room if you don't like stairs.

We stayed a weekend on one bedroom with full kitchen and living room. If you want to have an idea what it looks like, a good comparison is an old apartment for just married college students near by an university.
Pros: It was convenient to have a full kitchen. Price was reasonable.
Cons: Definitely needs urgent repairs and remodeling. The bath tub was clogged and they did not take care while we were there. The front desk is not helpful. I read in the reviews here before and it is true. My good guess is that the people who works there are seasonal employers who does not know the area. A good training of the place would help.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room 205. Just in case they did not fix the bathtub yet... ask for a different room...

We drove to Dutch John from Denver. What a delightful place to stay. On Saturday we took a 6 hour long fishing trip on the Green River. The Gorge is spectacular and the guide, Spencer, was really so helpful and good at finding the holes with the fish. My husband is the fisherman and he was thrilled with his catch (and release). Dinner both nights at the Resort Restaurant. They have a superb cook. The second night I had Copper River Salmon. Since we are from Alaska originally, that was a treat. The menu says "Friends staying with friends," and it is so true. Five stars for the Flaming Gorge Resort.

Room Tip: Any room is good -- all clean and comfortable
