Stone Lizard Lodging was a great motel base for our pre-Thanksgiving hikes in the Cedar Mesa area. Owners Kathy and Craig are very nice and friendly and make friends with their guests. They have done a great job fixing up what used to be the very run down Sunset Motel, taking most rooms down to bare studs during their remodel.

We stayed here one night based upon TA reviews after spending a week camping and hiking in the dessert. We were pleasantly surprised by this remodeled “mom and pop” old-style motel one block off of the main street. We arrived late and were greeted by the owner Craig who was friendly and very helpful. We told him we were in the area to hike and he brought up his google map and showed us some of the canyons that he enjoys in the Butler Wash area where we were headed next. He also shared some of his hiking guide-books with us and told us where we could buy copies. We found the room to be very comfortable and clean, with a great bed and a small but totally adequate bathroom. The owners obviously have put a lot of time and effort into making this place cozy and welcoming. The rooms were painted warm shades, the walls had nicely framed photos taken in the area, and the outside was carefully attended to with places to sit and flower baskets and beds. Some of the rooms contained beautiful metal art that were made by their son Adam. The cost was most reasonably and I have already recommended this place to many of my friends who travel in the area. I pass through the area and plan to go back!

As members of the Trail of the Ancients Archeological Group we often get to Blanding for it's world-class hiking, ruins and rock art. We had stayed at the old Sunset Motel before which recently came under new ownership, had it's name changed to Stone Lizard and has been upgraded to a very nice budget-boutique property. We were pleasantly surprised at the big change and make-over of this older motel. The new owners (Craig & Kathy) have worked hard to make it a great place to stay in this small Utah town. On this visit we were with another couple and chose to stay in the mini-suite (Room 14 - less than $100) which had two bedrooms, shared bath, kitchen & sitting area, Wi-Fi and TV. It was clean and cozy and the perfect place during our stay. So surprised at the transformation of this place, we asked Craig if we could see a standard room, which he gladly showed us. For a step back in time, with an update to now, at reasonable rates, we recommend the Stone Lizard in Blanding. (p.s. The owners are local and also run the popular Twin Rocks Trading Post and Restaurant in Bluff. They really know the area and are nice people!)

Room Tip: The mini suite was perfect for us two couples. We learned that they also have a larger "old ho...

This is an old time motor court from the 1950's (1940's?)--small room, small bath but absolutely clean, quiet and comfortable. If you just want a good night's sleep and don't need WiFi, pool, big lobby, national brand name, and a breakfast---this is the place. Outstanding value. It's a little hard to find because it's off the main drag but that makes it quiet. Friendly owner, works hard to make sure guests are comfortable. He made a special trip over to my car as I was leaving to make sure the room was OK and to help me find a good place for breakfast, offer road directions, etc.

What a pleasant surprise. The motel was clean, well maintained and comfortable. Yes, it's retro, but in a very comfortable way. The owner was very knowledgeable and friendly. We also enjoyed the museum and got good help from the information center. W e will come back!

I don't know how the owners feed themselves at the price they charge! I was very comfortable, and my room was dead quiet even though it was next to the office. I drove right past it the first time because the sign with the former name was still up, but Blanding is so small you can't get lost very long. There is no breakfast but Yak's Center Street Cafe opens by 6:30am.

We stayed at the Stone Lizard based on Trip Advisor reviews. It was a good choice. A little history about the hotel will put my review in perspective. First, the owners, Kathy and Craig, are "locals." They bought the motel just a year ago and have been renovating it. The motel was originally built in 1949 and the original units are adobe. We stayed in unit #4 which is one of the original units. It had a very nice king bed, mini-frig and small microwave. As has been noted in other reviews, the bathroom was small with older model tile, sink, etc. Many of the electrical plugs are provided by "power strips. Although I didn't ask Craig about this, it is probably due to the adobe construction which makes retrofitting electrical wiring, etc. difficult and very costlyt. The unit was clean and we had no problem with hot water. There is a laundry on site. They have Wi Fi. The price was very reasonable and I even received a military discount. Finally both Kathy and Craig are super friendly. Craig is a veritable cornucopia of information on the local Native American and geological sites of which there are many.
