“Turkey Vulture Haven”
Review of Frontera Audubon

Frontera Audubon

This is a small preserve in south Weslaco, TX that has had many interesting bird finds but over the past four or five years it has been overwhelmed during winter months by hundreds of Turkey Vultures. They are such beautiful gracefully fliers but they poop all over the place killing trees and keeping other species away!

Small and lush, this little sanctuary offers plenty of benches to sit and watch for the hummingbirds and warblers that like to frequent the area. The space is lovely for a picnic or casual relaxed birding, and is easy to find in Weslaco.

Very friendly staff that were willing to stay later so we could walk all the trails. It didn't take long, we saw many vultures, walked amongst their excrement, over grown, dry habitat. Needs some TLC and better signage. We had a beautiful day but was hard not to compare to Estero. The vultures must scare away the tweety birds. We bought a yearly pass to support the park.

We were disappointed with this site as it was run down and unkept. The trails were not marked and we found ourselves at a dead end trail that was underneath the turkey vultures roost. The smell was terrible and we were glad to get out of there. The songbirds weren't fed so we didn't see any. I bought a season pass for $25. as they need the support. We won't go back there again as there are too many better places to go.

A good birding spot. We saw green kingfisher, chachalacas and a couple of warblers. It is a nice wetland area and has feeders and butterflies at times. Bought a few postcards at gift shop.
Like any birding area, sometimes you see more birds than others. I would visit here again.
