“Loved it!”
Reviewed March 15, 2009

Families with children, couples, single or a group of friends ....... anybody will enjoy this place.
The entrance fee was minimal and the walk through the park was great.
I wish they had a more detailed booklet about the animals and conservation but even without, it was an educational visit.

“Enjoyable day at the zoo”
Reviewed July 23, 2008

We just returned from the Cameron Park Zoo. We were visiting with 5 grandchildren. I was very impressed with the zoo. Using the natural habitat of the area was great. Animals had room to roam. Elephants were not tied to a stake. Overall, I left feeling that the animals had a chance for a good life in this zoo. It was a hot Texas day, but there was lots of shade and benches to rest. The grandkids loved it. A very nice park that doesn't wear you out walking. We rested often and really enjoyed it. The Otter exhibit was great.

“Cameron Park Zoo--a treasure”
Reviewed July 21, 2008

The Cameron Park Zoo is a treasure. Not only does it have a wonderful Brazos River exhibit that acquaints the tourist with the Texas fauna from the Cap Rock to the Gulf, it also has both fresh water and salt water aquariums! From the lagoon with lemurs, black-handed gibbons and swans, to the big cat display with papa Lion, to the meerkats in their termite mound home, the zoo offers great animal viewing. There is plenty of shade, lots of benchs placed so you can sit and watch the animal antics, and a wonderful children's playground with a crawl-through snake and a tree house! We visit frequently and have never been disappointed. We would suggest that you plan to picnic in the nearby Cameron Park on the river. The two food venues are always crowded!

“Good thing it was only $7.00 for adults”
Reviewed July 21, 2008

We visited the Cameron park Zoo on Sunday. We arrived at 11:15 am (the Zoo opens at 11:00) to find a long line still waiting to get in. This was surprising since the parking lot was mostly empty. When we finally got to the ticket window we found out why. They only had 1 window open with 1 person working. We hoped someone had just called in sick instead of poor customer service. As the day went on...we found it to be the later.

At the snack cafe just inside the gate, we stopped for 2 fountain sodas and a snack. I ordered a pretzel. It was not just a pretzel as stated on the hand written sign; it was a pizza filled pretzel (YUK). I told the sales clerk that she should change her sign and she gave me an exasperated look and said, “Oh right”. As if she sarcastically would get right on that at my request.

Most of the exhibits have a thick wire mesh in front of the animals so you can barely see them. At 12:30pm the bears were just being put out in the exhibit. The few animals that were out were lethargic from the heat and very far from visitor’s view.

Go if you are not able to find anything better to do. Perhaps if the staff provided excellent customer service to make up for the poorly designed exhibits, it would be worth the trip but as it was on my visit, my family will not return.

“Great Mid-Sized Zoo”
Reviewed March 27, 2008

We took a road trip to Waco to see the Cameron Park Zoo and Dr. Pepper Museum over spring break. We went to the Zoo less than an hour after it opened and the DPM in the afternoon. It was a good thing we did the zoo early because it got hot by the afternoon and the parking lot filled up. People were waiting for us to pull out of our parking spot.

This zoo only takes about 2 1/2 hours to leisurely walk through. Because it is laid out in a loop, you never have to double back or worry about missing exhibits. Because they participate in the national zoo membership program, it cost us nothing to get in. That left us more money to buy things at their shop for the kids!

The animals appear to be well taken care of and the park is spotless. If you go early in the day, it isn't at all crowded, either.

I call it a midsized zoo because large zoos take upwards of 4 hours or more and small zoos take only an hour or so. It is just about right sized for a family. Much shorter and you feel ripped off, much longer and you become exhausted.

If you want to picnic lunch afterward, turn right out of the parking lot entrance and drive straight down 4th St/Ave until you enter Cameron Park proper. There are many meandering roads and picnic pavilions under trees to stop at and eat lunch. They even have Frisbee golf if you want to play. Just bring your own Frisbee!
