If you have ever been on I-10 between El Paso and San Antonio and worried about a place to stay for the night the El Capitan is worth the stop. It is clean, quite and a great value. The staff has always been very helpful. Adding to the experience is that the property has a 'story' behind it. It also has an on-site restaurant/bar.

Stayed here a few years ago and stopped in again on March 27. Place is unreal in its architecture and history. Rooms are a bit small but very comfortable and done up in original 1930's decor. Check in took a little time as clerk was unaware of internet special "Spring Fling" 20% off posted on their own website but after showing page I printed she took care of it. Room was on back side and no views to speak of but was there to sleep not sightsee. Last time we stayed the restaurant wasn't open for dinner, just breakfast. Ate dinner their and was quite good if a little pricey. Breakfast was typical fare. Again, this is the place to stay in Van Horn.

We (family of 4) stayed in one of the old, historic rooms. The renovation of the old building was flawless and was as clean and tight as a brand new high class hotel. Yes, the room was very small by today's standards but was more than adequate for our needs. We had two two toddler travel beds for our 3-year-old twins and there was room enough for them on the floor. The room design was optimized to not waste the valuable floorspace; for example, the flatscreen TV was mounted to the wall instead of taking up floorspace with a table or stand.

The lobby was beautiful, and the restaurant was also excellent! The chef even cooked up special dinners that were not on the menu for our 3-year-olds. Staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating.

When going through Van Horn, this is definitely the first choice of places to stay!

Staying at the El Capitan Hotel is certainly different than the ubiquitous motels along I-10; it feels like a real hotel. I stayed in the smallest room they have which I thought was the perfect size for a single traveler. Bathroom is small but has all the necessities. Comfortable bed and cool A/C made for a restful night. The restaurant/bar is convenient but prices are on the high side and many of the selections on the wine/beer menu were unavailable. The hotel really needs to open the restaurant for breakfast too as the continental offering smacks of "motel". Like the re-model and character of the place. Pleasant stay and would certainly stay there again.

Hotel was clean and safe. It had a boutique feeling which was novel until I noticed the thin walls and tiny bathroom. I was disappointed with the breakfast as there were no eggs or meat or any type of protein. A guy needs a hardy breakfast sometimes! Regardless, I was pleased overall with the hotel and would stay there again.

What a wonderful surprise. We've drivn thru/past Van Horn many times and had no idea this gem was here. It's well worth a night's stay, if not two. It's a charming remodeled 1930s period hotel. There's a wonderful courtyard complete with bubbling fountain. The lobby is colorful, open and most appealing. There's a cozy fireplace that invites settling in for conversation or reading. Then, there's the Gopher Hole that has a great menu; the burgers and fries were so good we finished our meal and could barely walk out. The rooms are small but clean and well appointed. On top of this, the staff is outstanding. Nuni, in the Gopher Hole, was one of the best servers we've had. Ralph, the GM is on site and you can tell there's a real team approach to serving the customers. We'll make a point to stop at the El Capitan the next time we're driving on I10.

There isn't much to the city of Van Horn except trains and trucks, but the historic Hotel El Capitan is definitely worth a stopover on the way to or from El Paso. You can see it had a glamorous past, and it's really a super spot, rich in well restored items and nostalgia. Apparently the restoration cost 2.5 million dollars, and it shows! The Gopher Hole Bar is just fabulous, the rooms large but cozy, the beds comfortable, good a/c, and a free continental style breakfast. We had a large patio suite with a balcony. Definitely worth stopping for and resting for one night.
