“Good Home Cookin'”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013 via mobile

I visit the restaurant for lunch as often as possible. Its a quaint little setting with real down hom cooking. I usually get whatever they have foe the special that day (very reasonably priced at around 8 bucks) and have not been disappointed. Chicken Ritz is probably my favorite. The special comes with a poppyseed dressing that is wonderful.

“Small town surprize”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

Intimate. Food quality is great and so is the staff. They have a unique menu every day with something for men with hearty appetites and women that may want something light.

“Charming Cottage, Very private, No complaints”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2012

There is really nowhere else to stay in the tiny town of Van Alstyne, but The Durning House is a little gem. The Sunday cottage is a little house, decorated to be comfortable and homey. With all kinds of extra touches and special items to make your stay nice.
I was a little dissappointed that the "breakfast" part of my Bed and Breakfast was just a muffin on DAy 1 and cereal on Day 2. So come for the nice accomodations not the breakfast. There is a selection of DVD's to watch, a huge jacuzzi tub, books, a kitchen (no stove). Loved it! And i never saw the owners. Just left the key on the door when I arrived and left.

“Charming Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2010

This restaurant specializes in ladies' lunches -- crisp salads and lighter fare. There is also a casserole or heavier hot dish for those craving something more substantial. Everything tastes homemade. There's a "special of the day" chalkboard and when it's gone, it's gone.

I choose the special on my visit and had a spinach-strawberry salad with homemade poppyseed dressing, avocado-chicken salad (delicious!), and an Italian-type casserole (very tasty).

And save room for a piece of that homemade pie. When our group of 8 visited, they were almost out of pie. They only had three types left.

The restaurant is located in the dining room and former back porch of an old house. The house is also a B&B. The decor is a mixture of antiques, knick knacks, lace doilies, floral prints, and, oddly enough, old gas station memorabilia.

The staff seemed a little short-handed the day we were there, but service was still fast, efficient and very friendly. We ordered for a friend who was running late. The food arrived, but he didn't. When he finally got there 20 minutes later, the owner fixed him a fresh, hot plate of food.

I understand that they have a special "hat day" once a year when all the ladies wear their best hats to lunch.

Check their hours online. They're not open all day or every day.
