“Texas City Dike”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Come see the new Texas City Dike. All the repairs have been completed to the damage caused by Hurricane Ike. The dike is even better than before. The City of Texas City just approved the funds to build another T-Head pier. The dike is kept cleaner than ever and is well worth the $5.00 vehicle entry fee to non-residents. Boyd's Bait Camp is opening up a burger joint next to their shop just at the entry of the dike.

“Major Improvement of a local attraction”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

I was born and raised in Texas City and as a youngster spent a lot of time fishing and crabbing on it. Back in the 40's and 50's it was not well cared for and full of brush and small trees. The road had some improvements done in the ensuing years but it was never maintained in such a way that would attract outsiders to come and visit. Hurricane Ike in 2008, managed to totally demolish all of the buildings and piers on the dike, The hurricane basically scoured the entire area of vegetation and destroyed a lot of the road. After a year and a lot of money it re-opened and what a difference. There is now a well maintained paved road all the way to the end. A pavilion where picnics and gatherings could be held was erected and a beach area was created on the north side about two thirds of the way to the end. Now, there are large crowds of people fishing, sailing, swimming, and picnicking every weekend.
I always loved the dike and would drive out to look at the water several times a week. Now with the new road and other improvements I find myself wanting to go even more often.
On the south side there are several miles of large granite boulders you can stand on to fish. At the end of the dike these rocks extend all the way around.
I like to watch the porpoises that swim and play at the end of the dike and also enjoy watching the large ships leaving the port on there way across the ocean. On days that the cruise ships are in port you have a good view of them as they sail away from Galveston which is just across the bay.
I don't fish anymore but am told that fishing at the end has been very good with large catches of fish using live shrimp as bait. There are a couple of bait shops at the entrance of the dike that also sells fresh fish and shrimp. So, if you don't catch any of your own, you can stop by and buy some on the way home.
On the weekends there is a $5 per carload charge to enter the dike from March through October. During the weekdays and winter admission is free.
The dike is a great place to go and relax, fish, enjoy family time, swimming, or just a quiet get away. If you are in the area I recommend a visit to what is known as the longest man made pier in the world.
