My wife and I were set for a day of off-road adventure in nearby Big Bend National Park. We planned to visit Mariscal Mine, an abandoned Quicksilver mine - the roads to which require a high clearance 4WD vehicle.

With our vehicle prepped, we got a huge amount of help from Greg and Valynda Henington, the proprietors of Far Flung, who told us of additional sights to see along our path that we would never have known about. They shared additional materials with us that made our fascinating trip one we'll never forget. We were also given strong advice to finish out the day going up Old Ore Road to Ernst Tinaja - such a valuable bit of advice...just beautiful. The jeep performed like a champ and all of the arrangements for rental could not have been easier.

As a real bonus, we rented one of the casitas, which FAR exceeded our expectations. When it's obvious that places have been designed without outdoor enthusiasts in mind and designed so beautifully, it adds to a trip. Without hesitation, we will be back to stay with Far Flung again in the future.

Four of us had a 6 hour jeep tour led by Chris. It was our first time in Big Bend. Although Chris has a wealth of knowledge he was as fresh and excited as us about what we saw. He has a huge font of knowledge, covering everything - geology, culture, plant life, wild life, medicinal plant use......all this and come lunchtime he served up a fabulous picnic out of nowhere. A must do!

Two of us booked a kayak trip through the canyons of the Big Bend Ranch State Park. Erica Little was our guide for the day a d was an excellent and entertaining host for the eight mile journey! She started with basic kayaking and river floating instructions and conginued to build our skill sets throughout the day. We navigated a series if white water rapids just challenging enough to make it interesting and gratifying to complete. Erica not only set out a fantastic lunch but educated us on the geologic and buman history duri g the entire trip.
I would encourage anyone to take the grip to see a part of the area that can only be seen from the river, and be sure to ask for Erica!

As part of our exploration of Big Bend National Park, we participated in two outings with Far Flung Outdoor Center: a half day ghost town jeep tour and an all day canoe trip down the Rio Grande. Making the arrangements ahead of time was pleasant and efficient and we received several e-mails with suggested packing lists and itineraries. Guests who stay at the Casitas at Far Flung receive a nominal discount for outings. Our jeep tour was just the two of us. Randy, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the area and the flora and fauna and he stopped often to explain details. Much of the tour is the journey to and from Buena Suerta (the remains of a mercury mining town) but we never felt rushed once we reached the town. Our canoe trip was fun and it was lucky that the weather warmed up significantly. The guides do not know until the day of departure where the trip will take place as it is dependent on water levels. We ended up in canoes (instead of rafts) and were able to spend time in the hotsprings, which were very relaxing. We also took an optional approximately one mile hike around the area. We were happy we threw in some stiff bottom sandals to change into (from our water shoes) as the trail was rocky. We were disappointed we did not know to bring cash ($6-15) to purchase the wire creations made by Mexican youth. Although the packing list was very informative, it would have been helpful to include walking shoes and cash to this list (although I realize if the trip had gone to a different part of the river, they might not have been needed). The guides were very patient and I felt safe during the entire river trip.

We heard about Far Flung from a business owner in Terlingua. They have a neat building where you check in, plus lots of gear, clothes, etc you can buy at reasonable prices. We met our friendly guide Ed, who told us a little about the trip before we loaded the van to the drop off location. They are very safety conscious and informative about what to expect. It was a wonderful raft trip, with a few small rapids and beautiful scenery. We stopped for a snack about half way. Great presentation of “snacks” tablecloth and all. We were very impressed. We highly recommend Far Flung!
