Ten Bits Ranch
Reviewed November 27, 2011

The Ten Bits Ranch was a perfect place to stay while on vacation in a place like the Big Bend. The service provided by Jennifer was excellent. She was available when needed and in the back ground when not. The knowledge and experience that Jennifer and Steve can offer about the area is worth the price. Thanks for a great time.

I'll agree with the vast majority of the other reviewers that TBR is a terrific place to stay - unforgettably beautiful setting, caring owners, very comfortable atmosphere. The 2.5 mi drive from the "highway" sets the mood, and the last turn into the "ranch" made my wife and me both smile with ear-to-ear grins. The buildings themselves were both whimsical and completely appropriate for the setting - our Schoolhouse was spotless, smelled fresh and clean, had a big, comfortable bed, and windows that let us see sunrises AND sunsets. Our early-September timing meant we had some heat to deal with, and the combination of a ceiling fan and 2 small desk fans did the trick (although my wife thinks she'd have preferred a hammock on the back porch to capture the night breezes). Jennifer did a great job coordinating our Rio Grande canoe trip, and our afternoon SUV tour ("Double Duece") which gave us access to private property not available to most tourists. We appreciated the variety at breakfast - fresh fruit, strong coffee, cereals, bread, warm quiche, yogurt. Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay and look forward to visiting next time we're near Big Bend!

We spent two nights here. Ten bits is off the beaten track and completely peaceful. The cabins are really well made and quirky. Rooms were comfortable and well equipped. The owner was really friendly and Sophie the dog was a real character. Only one down side was the food was out of date but as we were there off season I understand how this can happen.

Room Tip: We stayed in the school house

We stayed for two nights at the end of Feb/beginning of March and it was a wonderful place for my extended family to stay! My mother-in-law really enjoyed visiting with Jen and Steve one afternoon while the rest of us went rafting on the Rio Grande--which Jen set up for us. Breakfast was varied and plentiful, and the coffee kept coming for my father-in-law while everyone went horse back riding one morning--which Jen set up for us. The little houses are very clean and comfortable and give the whole property a wonderful ambience--truly old-style Western town vibe!
I would definitely stay there again while in the Big Bend area! Next time we hope to have s'mores around the camp fire :)

We just returned from staying at Ten Bits Ranch. The experience was wonderful! The cabins are very well decorated, the beds are comfortable, and it is so peaceful. Jennifer does a great job with breakfast and is a wonderful host. I will be telling all of my friends about it.

When we made reservations for a four night stay several months before our planned trip I specifically told them we wanted to do the guided archelogical hikes with the owner. Was told no problem. When we paid the remainder of our reservation in full about 30 days ahead of time I reminded them we wanted to do the special archelogical hikes during our stay. Again was told no problem. Two weeks before our stay I reqested a firm commitment for the hikes and was told it wasn't possible unless we paid double fee because the husband had to go back to work full time due to lack of bookings. We canceled our reservation and were told that they would be charging us a $250 penality for canceling less than 30 days in advance. We would have cancelled much earlier if they had been honest with us and told us the the guided hikes we wanted were not going to be offered. I think I understand now why their booking are so poor.

First, Let us point out that this reviewer never stayed at our facility. His complaint only regards our booking /cancellation policies which he was made very well aware of several times over the many weeks and months before his scheduled arrival (something the credit card company also agreed with during his dispute of charges – a dispute that was resolved in our favor). Second, let us also point out that taking a tour at the Ten Bits Ranch does not require a visitor stay at the ranch - the two are mutually exclusive. This visitor could have stayed anywhere he liked and still taken a tour with us. In this case, this visitor requested a specific tour guide (the owner of TBR) however his mid-week stay prevented the owner from personally conducting the requested tour due to work obligations at Big Bend National Park (The tour was never cancelled just rescheduled with a different guide). Third, let us also mention that he had not yet paid for the requested tour as we never charge (also, the TBR website clearly states that tours can be altered or cancelled at the discretion of TBR at any time). When he learned he was getting a different guide than requested, the visitor cancelled his stay, something he did not have to do. In fact, we would have been happy to have him. Basically, in spite of knowing our cancellation policies, he CHOSE to cancel his stay and forfeit the cancellation fee simply because he was unhappy about a change in tour guides… a tour he hadn’t even paid for yet.
So, now he’s disgruntled.
Even more so after his credit card company validates the cancellation fees (we had to send the CC company copious amounts of documentation regarding our policies and make copies of all our correspondence with this traveler). The result??…a bad review. Go figure. Well, sometimes it’s o.k. to get a bad review. It helps us focus on improving how we do things and helps Trip Advisor readers know that all the great reviews we do have are from people who actually have stayed with us and had a very nice time.
