Description: The bar and restaurant at La Kiva is once again open for business after a 14 month rebuilding project. The super modern kitchen is delighting customers with our constantly changing menu. Come and visit this iconic bar. The rock walls are up to four feet thick, huge patio, parts of the bar are underground and parts are semi subterranean. Live music changes frequently. Call for up to date information.

First off, you are in Terlingua. Not Dallas, not LA, not NY. The menu is limited. A bit pricey until you realize how far everything has to be shipped. I am not a fan of cigarette smoke, but gladly accept there is one place left for smokers and millions for non smokers. You never know if your $2 draft beer will be served in a plastic cup or chilled mug. You never know if they will be out of half the menu items. You do know there will be a crazy mix of locals, dusty hikers, and weirded out families.

What we wanted to order, the bbq trio was not to be. They were sold out of the ribs and chicken. We opted for the pork chop (excellent) and the brisket (above average). We chilled for about ninety minutes until our order arrived. We spoke with a couple the next day in Big Bend who waited three hours up the road in the ghost town restaurant to get a table, then almost an hour to eat, so this wasn't too bad.

We'll be back.

A friend recommended that we not miss a visit to La Kiva on our first trip to Big Bend. You shouldn't miss it either! Unique isn't really an adequate word to describe The Cave. If you're ever in Terlingua-GO! The atmosphere is super cool, the beer and drinks are cold and well poured by "Gumby"-the super cool bartender, and the food is absolutely delicious as prepared by the super cool, hard working owner.
It was much more than we expected-including the locals that arrived in full Texian regalia after participating in the Texas Independence Day parade. It was awesome.
Cheers to La Kiva and God Bless Texas!

Well, in Terlingua you might want to expect people which do not want to live by the rules but Kiva is special. We walked in: It's an in-door smoking place; I'm sorry this is 2013, not 1880. While looking for a table we were standing right next to the kitchen and saw the meals coming out (Pizza, Quesadilla, Chicken) and they all were really burned and looked more like charcoal than food. At this point we left.

Wow. Things have changed. Since our two year long rebirth of La Kiva smoking is no longer permitted except on the patio. We have built a huge, new kitchen and we have new kitchen staff. The kitchen is now open and we don't serve burnt food no matter how much you beg. I hope you will call in and see what a different experience the reborn La Kiva is on your next visit.

I was expecting something different. La Kiva is a bar for locals, and they do have food ,too.
I had the barbecue chicken, ribs, brisket. They were out of chicken.
The food was good, but the place is really about having a drink at the bar. And OMG- they still allow smoking inside! My son was amazed.
It has a cool , off the beaten path feeling.

La Kiva is a very unique restaurant/bar because it is located partially underground. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The steaks were excellent!
