“Great Launching Point for Big Bend National Park”
Reviewed June 30, 2012

My Husband and I stayed here for 5 days (4 nights) and we loved it! Terlingua is a funky little town with lots of personality and it's perfectly positioned near Big Bend National Park (and the state park also). It is only about a 10 or 15 minute drive from the Casitas to the entrance of Big Bend National Park, there aren't many places much closer. Las Casitas is located within walking distance of the Far Flung Outdoor Center, a liqour store and a Mexican restaurant, and within a few minutes drive of the other businesses in town. It was quiet and peaceful here, and we were hitting the bed early (10pm) so we could take advantage of the (relative) cool of the early morning. (It was over 100 degrees outside every day we were there in late June).

We were very pleased with the large size of the "room". It's actually a little house. We only needed 1 of the beds, but the other was useful as a platform of all of the planning sessions for our excursions into the park. I can see a family of 4 fitting in here just perfectly. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchenette was just enough for our needs. We had a microwave, minifridge (with really-minifreezer), kitchen sink, and full-size coffee maker. There were plates, silverware, mugs, cups, bottle/wine opener, etc. in the room, plus just enough coffee for 2 cups a day for 5 days. It had a nice back porch, and since we were in the back Casita, it looked out over some beautiful mountains at sunset. It is dark enough at night to see lots of beautiful stars and the Milky Way. Everything was super clean and new.

I loved the little touches like a real bath mat in the bathroom (shower stall only, no tub, but this is the desert so I don't think a tub should be expected down here) and huge, thick bath towels. There is even a hair dryer. The only criticism I have is that the faucets in our Casita's bathroom seem to have been installed backwards (turn the handles the wrong way from normal for off/on) but it only took 1 time to figure it out. The decor is lovely and perfect for the area. I love the metal ceiling and the hefty wood furniture, including the comfy rockers on the back porch.

I would stay here again, and recommend it to anyone I know who is going to the park. It was a little on the pricey side for us, put it is really a steal given what is provided. The only down side is that we went in the summer, so many of the shops were "closed for the season". That's not a reflection on this great place to stay though, just on the time of year we chose to visit.

Room Tip: They are all the same, though I'd ask for one of the back row to take advantage of the view if p...

My wife and I have lived in Austin for almost 3 years and hadn't made it to west Texas yet so we were glad to be able to make the trip. We will definitely be making many more. I won't go into the park too much here but it is beautiful and amazing and such a large state and national park.

As far as our stay at the Las Casitas, it is a wonderful place, so cool looking and so nice and comfortable inside. Everything was pretty much perfect and as described. The staff is very nice and will answer your questions and tell you anything you need to know about the area and the park. It is also very convenient if you are participating in one of the Far Flung tours or trips, it is right next door to the casitas. The area only gets about 10" of rain per year and I think they probably got 3 to 4" of it on our first night. The high water the next day did make it so we couldn't do our off road Jeep tour and we had to do one on the paved roads but it was great so we weren't too disappointed. They were in the process of building 6 more casitas which will make it even better.

The only thing I would probably suggest would be to have a full size refrigerator and a small stove. They do have a coffee maker, microwave, sink and all the dishes and utensils. There is a small courtyard between all six of the casitas with a very small ice machine and a few tables and a couple of grills. The grills were really dirty but that was the only thing in the whole place that didn't seem to get taken care of well so it wasn't too big of a deal to me.

The bathroom was well equipped and really quite large,

When you go out be sure to listen to them about drinking water and take plenty with you.

Go to breakfast at India's you won't be disappointed, it was delicious and the couple that runs India's were very friendly and will tell you stories about the area if you ask.

Room Tip: We stayed in casita #5 I don't remember the name of it. I assume the ones on each side of #5 are...

Thanks so much for your kind words about our casitas! I'm horrified that our grills were not up to par and we are working on making sure they are back in good shape! We appreciate you letting us know about that oversight!

Newly built, the cabins are beautifully furnished with 2 Queen beds in each, as well as flat screen tv, a fab spacious bathroom and a kitchen with sink, table and chairs, fridge, microwave, dishes, glasses, etc. Great extra touches were the brand mugs, local coffee and the microwave popcorn ...nice - you should sell the mugs in the shop! Best of all was the back porch with its rocking chairs, looking out over the landscaped garden, the desert and up at the stars.
From what we saw during our 4 days in Terlingua, the Casitas cannot be beaten!

Apparently Tripadvisor won't allow this place to be listed in the main hotel section of the site but only in "specialist accommodation". A travesty!! It was a fluke that I found it! It was the only place in the area that had private bathroom which was a deciding factor for us.

This place is brand new, well run, comfortable, clean, well positioned and everything has been well thought through by the owners. Apparently they will be adding 6 more cabins to make 12 available. This area has great potential and it's great to see they are stepping up to the opportunity.

There's a great little outdoor shelter with BBQ, tables & chairs etc for those who want to cook. A good refrigerator, microwave, sink and coffee maker in room. Cabins are quite spacious. A small family could stay comfortably. (Parents + 2 small kids). There's even a little veranda with 2 rocking chairs.

We loved it here and would stay nowhere else in this area!

The little Casitas are bigger than expected. A large room with kitchenette and a good size bathroom with a shower cubicle, all squeaky clean!. It's a short drive to Terlingua Ghost Town where you can go and enjoy the Starlight Theatre restaurant with its live music and eclectic clientele. The entrance of the NP is only a short drive so very handy location. There is very little options for breakfast although we found that those small road cafes are actually quite nice.

My husband and I were looking for a comfortable place to relax during the evenings after spending our days exploring Big Bend, and we were lucky enough to find this little desert flower called the Far Flung Outdoor Center Casitas. From the moment we were greeted until we checked out four days later we felt welcome, comfortable, and right at home. The owners of FFOC are there to take care of their guests like they are family; they even offered their home phone number for emergencies - WOW! Everyone at FFOC is hardworking and passionate The casita had everything we needed plus things we didn't expect. We brought food from home for every meal, and found plenty of space for storage and utensils for cooking on the grill. We were able to bring our dog with us so she could relax with us in the evenings and stay nice and cool while we were away during the day. The only item we would suggest bringing along for a little extra comfort are some chairs for the porch. The rocking chairs look good, but they were not the most comfortable after a physically taxing day in the desert. Luckily, I'm a chronic overpacker and we had a couple with us. :)
We enjoyed the jeep tour, and recommend it as a great way to see and learn things that you could overlook in the park. Our tour guide was fun and answered all of our questions about the terrain, the wildlife, fauna, and life in Terlingua.
We will definitely stay again in the Casitas, and I can't imagine why we would ever stay anywhere else. The people of Terlingua were all very friendly and we look forward to seeing them again!

We had a group of seven women staying at La Casitas. I must say, we were overly surprised with the top notch accommdations, customer service and location to Big Bend. These units are new, modern, clean and the beds are extremely comfortable. Attention to detail is throughout the property: water feature in the courtyard area, small ice maker for drinks, big rocking chairs on porches, etc. Included in these units is Satellite TV, mini fridge, coffee maker (coffee included), dishes, BBQ tools and big soft towels which are a nice touch after a long day of hiking. I appreciated the free wifi, gas grilling area and their pet friendly policy. Be sure and shop their gift shop, the prices are very reasonable and not over priced like other places. We went on their 3 hour Jeep tour through the desert. I must say, our guide Chris was a wealth of information and really educated us on the history, plants and wildlife within the desert. He made our tour extra special with his sense of humor and knowledge. We are planning a future trip back to La Casitas very soon and bringing more friends....we might just book all 6 cabins for our own private party!

Room Tip: Rooms 1,2,3 back porches face the courtyard/BBQ area. Rooms 4,5,6 face the mountains. Any cabin is...
