Surfside Beach is a great area to hang out with family if you are not looking for many other ammenities. This is a no-frills town, with basic services such as a couple of "quicky marts" for essentials, a couple of bars for some nightlife, and plenty of beach to walk or drive on. Outside of the major holidays where the beaches do get VERY crowded, the rest of the time it is very manageable. If you want to get a house for an extended stay, there are plenty to choose from and they are MUCH cheaper than just about anything on Galveston Island. Even though Surfside and the surrounding communities may not have much to offer with regards to attractions, Galveston Island is within a 45min - 1 hour drive up the coast (via a toll bridge that will cost you $2), and there is certainly plenty to do there if you want to take a "day trip". My family has been to Surfside many times over the years, and we will continue to enjoy their beaches!!!
