“Just LOVE it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

Our trip was in August 2011. We stayed 2 nights and wished we couldve stayed longer.Three of my best friends and I came from Fort Worth and Brady for a weekend in this little spot I literally googled for a driveaway vacation and spent the next three months reading he blog and dreaming of this place. So you can just about imagine the bar and expectations I had already set before I ever set foot in Surfside Beach.

Upon check in the young blonde girl Im sorry I have forgotten her name was very nice and friendly and there was no problem with our check in. Our room (305) was beautiful. It was a double queen, there was no musty smell (but I had brought an Airwick plug in after reading the blog- and I wouldnt have cared if it had. Its the beach. Things get musty and sandy.) We brought bottled water also recommended prior to arrival. But showering etc was no problem and we are not high maintenance. The beds were comfortable, the cable worked perfectly, internet was no problem, and the room so so cold we had to turn it off (not a complaint from girls who like it like a cave) , and we had a balcony that no it does not directly overlook the ocean from your balcony but standing at the rail or sitting on the bench you have a complete view of the water and it is very nice. (I understand there has been new construction so I am not sure what the view is now from our room)

We ate at Red Snapper Inn which was a great meal and lovely wait staff (yes its a little expensive but as long as you opt out of a glass of wine youll be good- its seafood not value menu at a burger joint) We ate dinner last night of stay at Pirates Alley (was late and they were about to close but they made sure we were fed a good hot meal of yummy shrimp baskets complete with fries and hushpuppies and it was very good- sat on deck with full view of Gulf, music coming from bar below, the lights on the deck makes for a picturesque memory), both mornings breakfast at Pirates Alley Cafe and had pancakes hash browns eggs sausage and had no problem with ordering and was a good value for the amount of food you get- I was stuffed (might recommend some alternatives for weight conscious patrons for breakfast) Talked with and laughed with staff who were all very accomodating and friendly and cooks made very good and hot breakfast in which we ate on the deck looking out over the gulf and watched a sweet couple have a beach wedding on the sand. Everyone cheered as they kissed. Who doesnt LOVE LOVE? Our day at the beach was hot, fun, and filled with laughter as we played in the waves (3 of us larger women and had no concerns about being on the beach and being self conscious- everyone was so nice and friendly) we backed the truck up to the beach and lay in the sun just enjoying some island time and some quality girlfriends time. At night spent some time in the tiki bar just lauging and enjoying the sounds of the waves. And during our stay? I did not have any problems with mosquitos at all.

Galveston is a 40 minute drive straight along the coastline and is worth the drive to stay out of the busy touristy stuff. We had a blast driving both ways with the sunroof open and blasting music under a full moon.

If you are looking for a good family spot, a romantic getaway, a spot to mend a broken heart, or a fun getaway with your girls, I highly recommend this hotel. I highly recommend Surfside Beach. I fell in love with this little place, the hotel, and the people before I ever stepped foot there, and they exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. Thank you to the staff of both Ocean Village Hotel, Pirates Alley, and all the people of Surfside Beach we met for making a lifelong friend of your little piece of heaven on Earth. We are planning on coming back in October this time to see you and we are counting down the days.

Until we meet again!
S. Walker

We stayed in the new building, room 406. The room was clean. The building was nice. I especially enjoyed the walkways and the large balcony/porch overlooking the gulf. However, as already pointed out the room was noisy. There was a constant knock in the wall/ceiling. People could be heard coming and going. Also, I thought it was a little misleading about the ocean view room advertised. There was really no view of the ocean from the room, only the buildings next door could be seen out our window.

Room Tip: Rooms opposite 406 might offer a better view of the ocean.

We appreciate the feedback. We have figure out the noise fromt he walls. We had a loose inlet pipe that needed to be secured. The view is a little better from the private balcony. We hope you do return for another visit in a different room.

We stayed overnight on the second floor, end unit of the main building. The room was clean and a nice size for an adult and two children. Beds were comfortable, air conditioning was good. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The cafe on property served a great breakfast. The croissant breakfast sandwich and the pancakes were wonderful. You can't beat the location. We walked out our rooms, down the stairs and onto the beach. The beach was clean, the sand was not rocky. We brought beach shoes but didn't have to use them. There was a lot of noise from the room upstairs. You could hear walking and any moving about. But we were wiped out from playing in the ocean and fell asleep despite the racket.

We stayed in the new building, room 404. They said this had just been opened two weeks. The room smelled fresh and new, it was clean, well furnished, and comfortable. Huge tv. Nice patio. Had a nice ramp to second floor. Experience was pleasant except for two issues. One, the bathroom floor was standing in water after your shower. Curtain was too short so water just poured out on floor. Second was the noise. The people in the room above us were so noisy we had trouble sleeping. Sounded like they were dropping bowling balls all night. The walls (and ceilings) are very thin. We could hear a conversation in the room next door. So if noise does not bother you, go for this clean new building on the property. Next time I would opt for top floor.

Restaurant nice with good breakfast. View of beach from restaurant is great. Lots of decking.

We will stay here again.

Room Tip: Stay in newest building, top floor.

We stayed 2 nights in the king suite with our 4 year old & we absolutely loved it! The suites are actually a few blocks down from the main hotel, which is attached to pirates alley cafe (awesome burgers- we had the san antonio burger). The mosquitos are the size of chickens - bring off or a citronella candle or something. We are already planning on coming back for Labor day & a week next summer!

We booked this hotel based on the reviews on this site and we were extremely disappointed. We stayed from June 24-26. Their rooms are $50/night more expensive than the chain hotels in neighbouring Lake Jackson but we figured the fact that this hotel is right on the beach makes up for the cost. We were wrong. First of all, their website boasts that every room has a patio that overlooks the ocean. Our patio overlooked the next door hotel's parking lot and if you looked over the railing and to the right, you could see the ocean. The room itself was gross. We walk in and the floor is covered in sand. The room has that horrible musty/moldy smell that you get with an air-conditioner that doesn't have a de-humidifier (the tv screen actually had a layer of moisture on it). The room had a fridge, but no microwave or hair-dryer, and worst of all there was no phone!!! The wifi was sporadic at best and one of the two nights we stayed there, we had no hot water. The attached restaurant, Pirate's Alley Cafe, was also a huge disappointment. We went there for breakfast and they were out of bacon. At the counter, I asked for syrup for my pancakes and the cook handed me a 4 litre jug of syrup with the seal still attached and walked away. I had to call him back because I couldn't get the seal off and he acted put out. The following afternoon, we went back for "happy hour" and they were out of beer. I ordered two extremely over-priced margaritas from their fancy margarita machine and they used this weird 17% alcohol that didn't even list what kind of alcohol it was (it just stated on the bottle it was good for jello shots) and they put in way less than a shot per drink.

I will say the beach was really nice. The seaweed isn't raked so the mosquitos are pretty horrible, but once you're in the water they leave you alone. The beaches surrounding the hotel are full of garbage but directly in front of the hotel it's really nice.

All in all, it was a complete waste of money to stay at this hotel. We would have been so much happier staying at a chain in Lake Jackson, saving our money and driving the five minutes to the beach. We will definitely not be staying here again.

This was our family's first stay at ocean village I decided to book here due to good comments on this site. Upon arrival at 3:30 (check in was at 3:00) our room was not ready and we were told it would be an hour not a good thing with three kids but ok we decided to wait at pirates alley very basic rest no customer service at all rude people there. We finlally checked in at 5:30 room was adequate but they were very nice at the hotel and let us check out at a later time so my kids can go to beach once more as we only had the one day. Staff was friendly set up was nice all in all I would go back.

Room Tip: They all seemed good all had views

Thank you for your feedback. It is important for us to know where we can improve our service. We did have a problem with turnaround times with new arrivals and have made staffing level changes to account for getting rooms cleaned faster on peak days. I will pass on your customer service issues with my Cafe staff so they understand the importance of friendly service.
