If not for the beautiful and convenient location of this campground, I would not rate as highly as I did. It has gotten terribly expensive for an excruciatingly small space of land. That price however, does include a nice view and some interesting avian life (if virtually no other wildlife), not to mention the uniquely eclectic atmosphere of SPI. We were in a brand new trailer equipped with surround sound on the entertainment center, but the spaces are so close together that we could not even watch a movie without disturbing our neighbors. The pool is large and well maintained but not heated, so in February was quite chilly. The fenced doggie area is small but okay for small breeds. The entire grounds are neat and well maintained.

There is very little to offer from what serves as a clubhouse or activity center. There is a big-screen TV and a really pathetic pool table with a few beat-up cue sticks (literally - one was broken off at the bottom). But bring your own chalk (none provided) and plenty of quarters because they charge $1 per game for the privilege. Outside there is a nice deck with tables and chairs for relaxing or imbibing. Shower and laundry facilities were adequate. Washer and dryer were both $1.50 per load. Wi-Fi is available throughout the park but we found that service was very spotty at our camp site.

Several reviewers mentioned nearby Pier 19 Restaurant where the food is very good and the atmosphere is fantastic. The entire restaurant is built on the pier, so every table overlooks the water. There are always pelicans and gulls swooping around and putting on quite a show. The pelicans are very tame and often there are dolphins bobbing around in the water as well, so its pretty cheap entertainment while you dine. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, all with good menu choices and nice daily specials. Pier 19 is definitely one of the nicer perks of staying at this campground.

Well, it's not camping. It is what it is. It reflects some of the worst aspects of our culture, but it is apparently compatible with our lust for immediate gratification and comfort, our laziness and our greed. I incude myself. It's being crammed in among row upon row of enormous hermetically sealed chrome and metal gas-guzzling poluting behemoths in a gravel and asphalt covered plot of filled mudflat where every available inch of land has been sacrificed to profit in a militarily run country club atmosphere where nobody seems to have enough imagination to do anything except attend the planned canned activities, eat oneself into hugely overweight shapes, point one's belly toward the sun while lying on one's lounge chair around the world class pool which nobody swims in, polish one's appallingly energy inefficient rig and walk one's ill-mannered barking pooch, often ignoring its waste matter. But otherwise it is a pleasant enough place to wait out the winter and have ones needs for clean restrooms and smiling staff met daily. If the profit-oriented ethic could be rearranged so that a third as many people could be accomodated with tents, small motor homes, pop-ups and the ghastly bus-size machines outlawed and the gravel replaced with grass and trees and the rabbits and raccoons and field mice and a skunk or two and maybe a pair of coyotes invited in and a birding platform installed and an area installed for hanging wet laundry and radios and loud TV outlawed I believe I could live here forever. Unfortunately this so-called campground has gone the way of almost all of the coastal Gulf areas and may continue to destroy the environment until it has spread its gravel and cabins and tiny spaces for gigantic rigs into the mudflats, the oil and gas and antifreeze and other human generated filth eventually making the mouth of the Laguna Madre uninhabitable for any species.

As always the KOA measures up to my expectations. We stayed here in a motorhome. This is a great park with a wonderful restaurant, Pier 19, right there. The lots with patio are very nice if not a little small. And in keeping with the KOA tradition, the prices are expensive.

We have been traveling through a few states this winter in all kind of recommended Rv parks. We greatly enjoyed our stay at this park. Yes, the sites are not that big, unless you take a pull through site and it is rather expensive. We paid 59.99 for a site with patio and 6$ more because we were three adults. First time in our trip that we had to pay for the third person.

But it's quiet, near the park and the shore. Great biking on the island. We calculated it was well worth the $$ more to stay there and did not regret it.

Room Tip: We prefer the siteswith a real patio. We chose one with no neighbours installed and no orange cones...

We rented two spots for Bikefest and ha a great time. The people were great and the place was spotless. We will stay here from now on. We spent more time BBQing and hanging out in the pool and hot tub then we did on the beach. Not to mention saving hundreds by not getting hotel rooms during an event weekend.

We are having a great experience here! We requested to change spaces after only a couple days and the staff were more than accomodating. They insisted on refunding the extra money we would have coming back from moving to a different site, even though we didn't expect or ask for the return of that money. I also had an urgent package being sent to me here just after we arrived and the KOA staff member rolled up in his golf kart (lol) and told me it had arrived. They keep all the facilities very neat and tidy. If you ask for something or for help, they seem to want to go out of their way to help you with any problem you may have or give you advice on local sites, restaurants, etc. VERY friendly park, staff and other folks staying here! The dog play area is small BUT right behind it is mud flats where we took our dog to run and there are other areas around here where you can take your pet out for a run. Their organized activities here are fun also. We joined in a morning water aerobics class just for the fun of it and were made welcome by everyone :() We want to come back here again!

Room Tip: If you don't want to be out in any of the strong winds or like it more quiet we recommend taking...

We stayed in a waterfront Cabin and loved it! There was ample space for all of us. A queen bedroom for us, bunk beds for the kids, and a pull out sofa also. The place was clean, the staff was amazing, the views were majestic, close to everything, and the dolphins swam right outside our porch every day. We could not have asked for a better place to stay! We will definitely be staying here again...hopefully sooner than later.

Room Tip: Ask for a waterfront cabin.
