“Texas off the Interstate.”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

If you want to experience Texas you have to get off the interstate highway, and the Spoetzl Brewery is the perfect excuse. The tour is just the right length, the beer is fresh, and the folks are friendly. The beer is really good too, and I'm not easily impressed (nearly every town in Wisconsin has a brewery). My visit to Spoetzl gave me a very good impression of the state of Texas and it's people.

“Yummy beer!”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Fun place to spend about 2 hours. The tour is brief but informative about the brewery's history. Best part is the tasting room! You get 4 small glasses of beer! There is also all sorts of souvenirs to buy. I live in central Texas so this was a quick day trip for me. Good afternoon trip and free!

The Spoetzl Brewery is the maker of the famous Shiner Beer. The every popular and famous Shiner Bock is well know, but my favorite is the Shiner Blonde. The Brewery was built by locals who formed a brewing association, immigrants from Germany who missed their beer. In 1915 Kosmas Spoetzl who was a native of Bavaria and had operated a brewery in Cairo, Egypt bought the establishment and history was in the making. The brewery even stayed open during Prohibiton by making near beer. The owner's daughter, Miss Cedelie" took over operations in 1922 and became the only woman in the United States to be a sole owner of a brewery in 1950. The tasting room is filled with souvenirs for purchase and all the marvelous beers are available for tasting. We were lucky to have the Brew Master himself conduct our tour.

“Take the tour!”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

On the Shiner beer tour, you'll sample four beers (your choice), view a fifteen-minute video, then enjoy a guided tour of the brewery. The gift shop has some great souvenirs, including Shiner buckets, t-shirts, barware, benches, and more. The tour is free, but you need to check times on their website. Arrive at least thirty minutes before the tour for the tasting; otherwise, everyone on the tour will be there and create long lines. Although you can't purchase beer at the brewery, several places in town sell it, especially a convenience store at the edge of town. "Family Reunion" is the name of a great twelve-pack that features the various Shiner choices, from blonde to bock.
